Friday Night SANFL telecast?

Postby whufc » Thu May 19, 2011 12:00 pm

Should the SANFL telecast the friday night matches instead of the saturday afternoon games when available.

The games could be telecast on half an hour delay which would still be put these games ahead of 8.30 AFL coverage, so they would have over an hour of being the only football game on free to air or pay t.v.

This would get a bigger audience as all amatuer/country footballers would have the ability to watch the telecast as well.

The half an hour delay would be no different to how Saturday games are telecast so shouldnt effect the gate.

Just a thought anyway.

ABC aren't a commercial station, ratings aren't their primary focus. Televising Saturday afternoon state league footy is a community service. The minute Saturday afternoon footy is taken off the ABC is the minute we lose SANFL TV coverage.

Yes

I can't make it to Friday night games and would like the opportunity to see it once in a while.

I would also imagine that lighting at most SANFL grounds wouldn't be up to the appropriate standard for TV telecasts.

We have a wiener.

I would have to shine a torch on the tv to see games broadcast from Richmond. Plus we would be "seeing" the same few teams every week.

Silly idea whufc.

Just watching highlights from the West vs Glenelg game which were shown on the half time break of this weeks telecast, the game come up* perfectly no viewing issues at all, no worse than watching a game played in muddy or rainy conditions.

Saturday night would be just as applicable, would give a wider viewing audience the chance to watch these games. Between Central/Norwood/West/South and Glenelg and Eagles(?) who are looking to get lights for next season i think there would be a pretty even spread especially when you consider they play other opponents who would also be shown.

Wouldnt have to be every friday night!

presuming lighting is up to standard, i'd suggest instead of having to have a match going head to head with an afl match at footy park like the wwt v west match is this week why not replay the night befores match ?
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

And I like your thinking 'whufc'. But - As well as, not instead of, mate.

Any promotion of our state's football over un-afl is a great thing!
Forget just wishing for it, we should be demanding it !
If your team is playing on a Friday night it means you can not only go and watch 'em, but you can tape the
game and replay it when you get home or whenever you like to re-enjoy or catch any action you missed.
Plus there's the added bonus of being able to go to your choice of other games over the weekend if you've
got a 'leave pass for good behaviour' or have managed to escape the clutches of your 'jailer' for a day out.
Better still, take her and the kids with you. You might get a good price for 'em !

I'd only be against TV coverage on Friday nights if idiots stayed home to watch their own teams instead of
going to their games.

It might be a good promotional and crowd increasing idea for the SANFL to give those using their season
passes a free ticket to attend one (or more) of the weekend's other games. Dunno about you, but I always
enjoy checking out games between clubs other than my own as a neutral supporter. Especially if it gives you
a chance to spy on the mob you're gonna play next week.

Maybe a poll is in order 'whufc'. I can't wait to vote yes !
Anything that gets me away from 'Fort Battle-Axe' is OK by me !!!

I really hate Adelaide United but one of their promotions was awesome.

It was there 'shout a mate' promotion which meant all AU Season Ticket Holders could get 4 tickets to use at one of the selected games available.

Was a magnificent way to get people to bring along mates to the games. Would love to see Central do something similar could maybe include a drink voucher to be used in the clubrooms on the day of the match. No one just buys one beer!

The Eagles are trying something similar this weekend by giving members the chance to take a mate for free.
Think they just have to print out ticket off the website, suppose you'd have to enter you're member number or ID somewhere.

But certainly would be a good idea SABRE, if we could come up with some sort of reciprocal rights on a membership for, say, three games a year, or one game at each other venue.

Agree, bayman, think this would be a good idea when there is a Saturday arvo AFL game at Footy Park

Rough Figures

The south australian amatuer league has 7 division with a grade and reserves and roughly 8 teams in each division = roughly 2350 players

country leagues- at very least 15 leagues (according to whats on the regional forums) on average 6 teams in each league with both a and b grade= roughly 3700 players

Nearly all of these leagues are played on Saturday Afternoons, if you were to have a Friday night match you would expose the telecast to roughly 6000 more people who have an obvious interest in Australian Rules Football.

That does not include Coaches, Officals, Volunteers, Family members who all choose to go watch there local football. It also does not include supporters who are at other SANFL games that are being played on the same day.

Surely having the oppurtunity to broadcast a game to an extra 8000 people would have to be considered a positive, Wouldnt it?

Remember only rough figures and i have would have underestimated how many country leagues there are, plus i havent taken into account C Grade sides.

Great Work Eagles, would love to see it include a 'drink voucher' or maybe buy '1 get 1 free meal voucher' in the clubrooms as well. Lets get these people spending money at these clubs, produce a good product and they will come back.

Ahhhhhhh my friend the SANFL telecast would be starting around an hour before the AFL telecast even starts. Im sure if the game is good enough people will continue to watch, even if they just flick for the scores and watch in between the AFL games adverts and quarter time breaks that would have to be a good thing yeah.

Also if you had West vs Central telecast i think there would be a hell of a lot of people from the Riverland/Barossa area who would be just as, if not more interested in seeing how players from their clubs/league are going as they never get that oppurtunity
