RD 9 v Collingwood

Talk on the national game

RD 9 v Collingwood

Postby Gingernuts » Sun May 15, 2011 10:52 pm

Bored so I thought I'd start a thread for the next game.

A real tough match up this week against a side hurting after being made 'number 2' on Friday night. Every thought screams 'flogging' but there are reasons for some hope IMO:

- We have a good record at Etihad, and a good record against the Pies there in particular.
- We've beaten them as rank underdogs there a couple of times in the past.
- Jolly is out, which means Sauce has a good chance of getting his hands to it.

It's gonna be an uphill battle no doubt about it, but sometimes when there's no expectations on you - that's when you are freed up to perform without fear of failure.

There's enough in this Adelaide side to take it up to Collingwood if they want it bad enough.

Regardless of the result, I think it's important that the boys do enough to take confidence out of the game, as the draw really opens up for Adelaide in the next month or so if they can make the most of it and get some momentum going.

Can't possibly see a win, but it needs to be a competitive performance.
Mentally we perform better against established sides and that needs to continue.

Average midfield and general lack of experience will be the main issues.

So it seems Jolly might be fit in the end, as well as Maxwell & Johnson:

Tough to stay optimistic about this one, TBH I'm already starting to I smell blood in the water. We could have a slaughter on our hands. :?

Not expecting a win but sure as hell a competitive performance.

The AFC is not a club that gets flogged.

As Roo said the lads need to show pride in the jumper.

So should Walke come back in this week on the back of his 7 goals for Norwood, or should he stay there for another week?

I'm in two minds, but I'm thinking he should probably have 1 more week with Norwood.

Pretty hard to tackle when you've got the ball on a string...

Bring him back

Walker did kick 7 but had only 9 possesions (IIRC). Going from the general consesus he still didn't do enough to warrant a recall in to the team. The kid has the makings of a superstar but, is very lazy!

He's a forward in the mold of Modra and Fevola. If the delivery is good, then magic can happen - but when the ball hits the deck or goes to the opposition, then it's someone elses job.

Yeah it's a tough one. There has never been any doubts over his ability to kick goals, its just when he doesnt have the ball!

I wouldnt mind seeing Gunstan have another game and see where he is at against collingwood.

Any other possible inclusions? Omissions?

I didn't agree with him getting dropped - but you gotta admit our forward pressure was much better last week.

I don't think there'd be too many other changes to the team from last week. Might be the first time this year we actually name an unchanged lineup!

Walkers Stats so far this year.

    Team ................. Goals ....... Disposals ....... Marks ....... Tackles

    Hawks ................ 4.2 ................ 9 ................. 4 ................ 1

    Freo .................... 2.3 ................ 14 ................ 9 ................ 0

    Port ..................... 2.1 ................ 11 ................ 5 ................ 1

    Carl ..................... 4.1 ................ 10 ................ 5 ............... 0

    Saints ................. 1.2 ................ 7 ................. 1 ................. 0

    Melb ................... 0.0 ................ 10 ................ 3 ................ 0

Watching games I have noticed that most of his goals have come from crumbing rather than marks and when he does mark it has been up the ground.

In saying this though I still didn't think he should have been dropped for the suns game but I was getting frustrated with him.

Also after being at the suns game live I noticed how bad our delivery into the forward line is, Especially to a leading player, more often than not the ball was kicked over the players head to the defender.

Will need to improve a great deal to compete with Collingwood.

I would bring Walker back in and leave him in the square with Tippett and have Gunston and Wright at there feet.

I think VB needs to be drug tested ;)
Reading the 'tiser today and he stated that our midlfield rivals that of Collingwood. Now, I love the Crows but I don't think that you can compare Thompson, Reilly and Douglas to Swan, Pendlebury and Thomas.

Two years ago Reilly was playing for his career at the Crows. I was one that was on the ship him back to Melbourne train but, am very glad he has made me eat my words. He has turned in to a very valuable member of the team. Douglas is a spud at best and was the best of an average crop last year. Thompson is one that is justifiable to be mentioned in the same article as those 3. A very under rated midfielder and IMO would be one of the Top 10 ranked players in the league.

Would love to hear everyones opinion wether you agree with me or not.

I wouldnt throw Thomas in there but i agree, at the moment i wouldnt be comparing us to Pendles, Swan, Ball.

Thompson and Van Berlo are the only ones i woud rate with them at the moment. I think Van Berlo is very underrated.

Hopefully in a couple of years time we can compare our midfield of Dangerfield, Sloane, Mackay, Thomspon, Van Berlo and at his best Vince to the likes of collingwood or Geelong.
