A few good from Port

- Beinke snapping a goal literally as the siren went at the Parade in a night match circa 99/00 to win the match by a couple of points

- Eugene Warrior having a huge last quarter against Westies at Richmond in 01 or 02. West led all day, by as much as 5 goals at one point, only for Port to get level with Port rushing a behind late to win it.

- Wasnt a win, but I remember Port kicking 2 goals in the final 15 seconds against Glenelg in 2001, with a Tony Brown kick in midair as the siren went to draw the game.

- Luke Slattery kicking the winner against South I think back in 06/07 with a goal from a tight angle with 20 seconds or so left.

And a negative:

- Scott ******* Simister. That is all.

On that note, I vaguely recall Port reserves coming from some way down in the 1997 (?) Grand Final to hit the front late in the final term and win the match. Eugene played a starring role in that comeback.

(edit) Eugene Warrior... a thoroughly disappointing waste of serious football talent.

Very impressive in that 99 grand final actually. Would be interesting to know how many more SANFL games he played after that g/f.

Thanks AH, I'm presuming discipline/commitment may have become the issue that resulted in him moving on. From memory he then got cleared to Glenelg? I think, but barely played a game there. Only going from memory though so I stand corrected.

Yes, he was cleared to Glenelg but I have no record of games and goals, so if anyone out there knows how many (if any) I'd like to know.

I'm not so sure it was discipline, but more a personality clash with several players. One our players owned a bakery and Warrior went there very abusive to that player's wife and it caused factions within the club. I won't mention names or what it was about, it's water under the bridge.

Last gasp wins...your memorable games

Postby dedja » Sat May 14, 2011 11:49 pm

Eugene had talent to burn ... I played with him when he was very young. His old man played in the same side ... top bloke.

A real shame junior didn't have the commitment to play at the level required.

Spelly would have to fill us in here but I can't remember how close it was at the end, just that Port kicked the first 10 or 11 goals of the match and we clawed our way back to win. And Simister took a hanger in the goalsquare.

I think we were up by 9 goals pretty early in the 2nd quarter. All I remember is Olsen kicking out on the full with about 30 seconds left or so, someone for West kicking to the square and Simister taking a 'Modra vs NM 93' type mark in the goal square to win the match with about 10 seconds left.

Port lead 9.1 to 0.1 at quarter time which is when ABC went to air live at 8.30 on that Friday night. Was still 11 goals to 4 at half time.

Scott Loving was the player who bombed it in from the boundary.

Both teams did similarly to one another that year IIRC, with the Blues rolling back a 10 goal deficit earlier in the season at Footy Park ... Both games were among the most extraordinary Ive ever seen (well highlights of anyway)

Its one that I remember as a kid growing listening on the radio and I think it was mickan or mickinnon for west kicking a goal after the siren to roll Norwood in the early 80s was it 83? I was devastated.
Not memorable for a Norwood fan but I remember it vividly.

One Norwood game that sticks in my mind was the elimination final win against the bays in the early 90s,I reckon choco Williams was coaching them and Neil Craig norwood . if I remember correctly we stole that game late or run over them in the last qtr
Wonder if anybody has got the scores from those 2 games

Richmond Oval in 1984 .. Neil Hein threw the ball back to Mickan, but it was too high and was pinged with a 15 metre penalty for time wasting. Siren went and Mickan went back and slotted a nice goal from 35 or 40m out.

Haven't got scores but that was the 1994 Elimiantion final, Choco's last game at the club.

IIRC we were behind for most of teh day but rallied in teh 3rd qtr to get abck to within a goal at 3/4 time (or we may ahve been just in front). Norwood just ran over us in teh last qtr and we lost by 7-8 goals. I sure A hawk has the scores.

What sticks in my mind is the spray Chocco gave after the game, best spray I've ever heard, bar none. You can still see where the paint has been peeled in the old Change room #2 at Footy park. He didn't miss anyone and by christ everything he said was 100% spot on.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
