Jason Davenport was on crutches, Matthew Rankine had injured his hamstring, Logan Hill had just limped off and Daniel Caire was having treatment for a cut mouth. It is at such a critical time as this that true character shows out and the last Q saw Westies play some of the best and toughest team footy you could ever wish to see. Despite Aaron Fielke being on one leg for most of the last Q, for a fierce tackle that saw him reported, we booted 6 magnificent goals to only 1 from a dispirited and indirect Glenelg to run out convincing winners.
With 3 of their 5 wins against teams from last year’s finals perhaps the doubters will now be forced to concede that the Bloods are the real deal. From half way through the 2Q we kicked 14 gls to the Bays 5 to record our first win at Richmond against them since 2004.
The opening Q was very ordinary and the first goal of the game was not kicked until the 23min mark. There were heaps of mistakes and the Bays dominated the game with the WA backline working overtime to keep them out. 1Q WA 0.3, Gl 2.6.
Westies got their first goal at the ten minute mark of the 2Q and despite outscoring Gl by 4 to 3 were still behind at half time. The goals were shared between Macreadie, F Caruso, Beech and a glorious goal from the talented and very fast M Rankine. Half time WA 4.5, Gl 5.9.
The premiership Q saw the Bloods midfield turn the screws, intimidating and unsettling the Bays with their fierce tackling and teamwork. Shane Birss’ goal from the SW pocket boundary the highlight. 3Q WA 8.5, Gl 6.10.
The last Q saw the dividend paid for the third Q investment. With 2 injured on the bench the team played inspired footy driving the ball forward relentlessly to create scoring opportunities. Moran came into the game to provide Willets much needed support. Webb took a screamer and goaled. The Ezard brothers combined for a goal. Lobbe got one off the ground and everyone thought he had another except the umpire who awarded a pt. Even Kurt Thompson ran down the ground to boot a major and Jonno Beech kicked one on the siren.
There were only 2 multiple goalkickers, Lobbe and Beech, with the others being shared between ten players such was the evenness of the effort. The lack of a key forward is still a worry but hopefully Brad Fisher will return to fill that role. Webb and Moran had little impact while playing forward.
Pretty much everyone contributed to the win but you have to single a few out if only to provoke some reaction. Steve Morris with 28 possessions was best for the second week in a row. He plays a ‘straight ahead’ high risk style but he starts so many of our attacks with his run from the full back line. Daniel Caire was close behind. The midfield took some time to get it together but when they did they dominated. Macreadie played his best game since Prospect and Ezard was everywhere – his offensive and defensive efforts make him the complete footballer. Shane Birss played, arguably his best game for the club opening up the game with his handball. Ryan Ferguson was again directing traffic at CHB. N Caruso and Fielke worked hard, Willets was great early when he single-handed took on the Bays rucks but was helped out as the game wore on by Webb, Moran and Lobbe. F Caruso showed that he needed the run last week to work his way back to form. Special mention also to Green, Silvester and Kurt Thompson who pressured the Gl forwards into error. Kurt Thompson may well have established himself in the side such was his effort.
Looking back on the game Westies started slowly but gradually built momentum while their pressure was wearing down the Bays and forcing them into error and indirect play. The 6gl to 1 last Q showed how dominant were the Bloods. Glenelg were simply unable to maintain the pressure they applied early in the game and let themselves down in front of goal.
The 2s were thrashed 17.16 to 6.5.

Just seen the "incident" on the ABC. I think you might be over reacting. Soft report, but will probably get a game.

No Thiele, thinking more of a small Power/Glenelg forward drafted on the back of a couple of good ressies games in 09.
