You’d normally be pretty happy with your team kicking 20 gls and winning by 12 but this was a strangely unsatisfying game to watch. It lacked much in the way of atmosphere and deteriorated as it went on. Westies played their best footy in the first half, the 3rdQ was a very poor example of our great game with mistakes aplenty and the last was a formality with South outscoring Westies 4gls to 3. It was a much more open and flowing game than last weeks wrestle at Alberton but the contest was littered with mistakes from both sides.

Westies applied great pressure but South had plenty of the footy and centre breaks were 16 apiece for the game. Westies finished off heaps better in front of goal and had maybe ten of the best 12 players on the ground but it was hard to take many positives from the contest. Daniel Webb booted 5 but should have had more. He took some good marks but spilt many others and wasted opportunities but 5 gls from 6 marks and ten kicks is a pretty good return. Ezard was the dominant player on the ground. He kicked 3 but was instrumental in many more. Beech, Birss, Caire, Ben Fisher and Nat Caruso were all busy. Willets does much of his best work around the ground. Fielke is a much improved player and was high in our best players.

Pretty much half the game was played in our backlines and Morris and Ferguson dominated all day. Fergy is like a traffic cop initiating the attack with his long and telling handballs. Matthew Rankin is developing nicely and injects valuable pace into the game plan.

The Lobbe experiment at CHF was a dismal failure and South started many of their forward thrusts from his inability to keep the ball in the area. It is curious that Lobbe and Webb, both on the Power list are so poor overhead considering their height. Fort Caruso also made a minimal contribution and must be under pressure from someone like Motlop who looked a class above in the 2s.

Ben Fisher had a tough time. First, 102kg Cockshell sat on his head and neck and was reported for his indiscretion. (South had 2 players reported) Next he injured his leg and was assisted from the ground. His namesake, Brad, was also injured an ankle and did not reappear after half time. He seems wasted on the FF line and could well be tried at CHF.

Goalkickers included Webb with 5, Ezard 3 and Birss, Willets, N Caruso and Brad Fisher with 2. Q by Q Westies kicked 6, 6, 5 and 3. Final score 20.13 to SA 8.9.

The 2s won 9.11 to 8.9.

The north half of the ground was without power after half time and this included the scoreboard. A temporary board was hastily erected and did the job.

I see your point HP but the clubs have to have a resonably 'fair share' of television coverage one would think...

I understand that but maybe not this match. In other words maybe South V Glenelg at Glenelg to have their turn ,if that makes sense. No disrespect at all but it is not a good look.

Yeah, fair enough. That being said, when ever there is an ABC game at Unley it looks like there are 2 people (scoreboard attendants) watching on the outer side wing ;)

Often thought that would be effective at certain grounds, Richmond one of them. Would then see a packed grandstand in the background.

Anyway, back to the game at hand, did young Brad Eagle make the final cut and play league for the Bloods? If so, how did he go?

WEST Adelaide has atoned for its spirit-sapping loss to Port Adelaide with a 20-goal feast against South Adelaide.
After a week of an internal search for answers and more than one terse word from coach Andy Collins, the Bloods busted the game open by creating a 35-point buffer in the first quarter and didn't look back from there.

They finished 76 in front. The final scoreline had Panthers coach Rod Fuller scratching his head over his side's inconsistencies while West Adelaide returned to winning after its six-game through the pre-season, the Foxtel Cup and the home-and-away was snapped at Alberton.

It was a chuffed Collins who could reflect on having restored the high standards set over the pre-season.

"We really went away from our principles, that hardness at the contest and keeping to our principles,'' Collins said.

"But (today) we really stuck to what we know, even when they got a couple of goals."

Ryan Willits played a peach of a game and laid down the rules by monstering them in the ruck (he had 40 hitouts), kicking two goals and helping himself to 18 disposals playing moving around to have an impact both forward and back.

But it was just as much about the littlemen, with Jimmy Ezard running past like a man on a motor cycle and Shane Birss showing of speed of both mind and foot and some crisp deliveries.

Up forwards, and this is one of the things that have made the Bloods look different this year, they had multiple targets.

Ex-Blue Brad Fischer straightened them up but came on after rolling an ankle and is tipped to spend a few weeks on the sidelines.

It hurt, but it brought no crisis: Daniel Webb just carried on and finished the day with five goals.

The Panthers have made some obvious inroads under Fuller and there were passages of quick, slick ball movement.

They also gathered healthy numbers around the contests and if nothing else, could walk off with their heads held high for not stopping before the final siren.

When they were clicking, players such as Toby Stribling, Nicholas Liddle and Andrew Horne were busy and prominent and Andrew Ainger and was made himself noticed to the midfielders with powerful leads.

But Fuller had to question the abyss between South's best and their worst, and wondered aloud whether it came down to maturity.

"There have just been a lot of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde performances in the last month,'' he said.

"We've had some terrific performances scattered among poor efforts at Central and a poor effort today.

"I guess we've got to start to work on what causes that to happen ... question the personnel, are they the right type of guys? If they are, we have to make sure that are highs and lows are closer together.

''Ben Fisher was the other casualty for West, having suffered from a nerve-related complaint, but the club is hopeful he'll be fit to play next week.

For South, both Adam Cockshell and Stribling are on report for high, forceful contact.

WEST ADELAIDE 7.3 12.8 17.8 20.13 (133)

SOUTH ADELAIDE 1.4 3.4 4.7 8.9 (57)

GOALS West Adelaide: Webb 5, Ezard 3, Birss, Willits, Caruso, Brad Fisher 2, Fielke, MacReadie, Ben Fisher, Morris South: Cockshell, Ainger 2, Cook, O'Keefe, Wundke, Veide

BEST West Adelaide: Willits, Ezard, Webb, Birss, Hill, Ferguson, Davenport South: Stribling, Thewlis, Horne, Liddle, Ainger

Better still get the SANFL and the ABC to supply each club with 3000 cardboard cut outs each with a team flag stuck to it.

You would have thought with the Bloods first at the ball all day the free kicks would have been in their favour. I reckon the umpires could see the Panthers in trouble and tried to help in the second half.

Agree Bloods08, Rankine was super in only his second (?) game....how quick is he?

To be honest, I think Cockshell should consider himself fortunate if it is thrown out. No malice in it, but the ball carrier has to be protected and it was clumsy at best.

I thought the pressure at the game was first rate > youd expect a lot of turnovers with this sort of pressure. Live at the game, we saw some excellent skill level as well. It deserved a better crowd.

The scariest part for South supporters is that they're bottom in the Reserves, Under 18's and Under 16's, having won a combined total of two games from 18 matches...
