Amazing how times change. I have a good mate that played for Creeks right through the ranks from minis to A Grade. What I gathered through him was that they were proud of their culture in nurturing local talent and hated everything Victor stood for when I was playing (ie having paid recruits etc). I was once chatting to my mate and the Creek coach of the day and when he realised I played for Victor I dont think I've ever felt such despise!

It is hard to be competitive without recruiting (esp when you have a smaller town base), but I do wonder how those same people feel about the way the club goes about things (esp with it's more recent reputation as a big $ club) nowadays as many of them are still involved.

Fair points FOD - although in fairness this year many of the 'new' players are actually local products who are returning from sojourns elsewhere.

I think the club culture as a whole seems very strong though, and one of the reasons it's such an attractive destination for recruits (ie - it's not just the cash that draws people to the Creek). It's a great club and community to be around TBH, and provides much more than just cash to those who want to get involved.

That said I do know of one local lad who went elsewhere this season in search of more game time. I think that was more about personal choice though, he was always only even going to be a fringe player at LC whereas he'll be playing A's where he's gone.

Thanks for the response.

I think it is (or was - that was my point I guess) a great club, and I'm sure it isnt just about money. It was the same for us in the 90s - many of the glenelg guys joined to be with their mates already there. Sure we had a (very) few that didnt like the "import" side of things, but to be honest many of those imports turned out to be far better club people than those few anyway. eg - for all the hate Ross Gibbs bought upon himself from outside, he was a great fun bloke to have around - and he never missed a club function. Grant Levy was an import - we all know his record as a player and coach....now he is the club president!

I'm not one for rumour-mongering really, but I did hear a little whisper of dis-harmony recently and I had been wondering for a while about the effect the change in policy has had on the club.

I come from a rival club in the League and say good luck to Langhornes Ck,as we are all aware on how many points players each club can play in their A grade on any given day and providing they do not exceed that i cannot see the problem so why post that crap.If Langornes Ck have internal probs with this i cannot see why anyone really cares as it is something their club needs to deal with,so lets move on and good luck to them,as i think they are proffesionally run club and do not believe for one minuite players are pissed off.

Rival club??? Pretty passionate/defensive response......maybe not! Feel free to discuss something else then luvayarn.

For the record, if they're attracting these good players and can afford them, then good luck to them.

Sorry to suprise you but yes i am from a Rival Club (closer to yours infact) and i agree if they can attract and afford good luck.I would suggest that people gettin on here bagging clubs for recruiting may be a tad envious and wished some of the players mentioned were actually playing in their colours. Some clubs within this league need to recruit to avoid the demise of their club and some clubs choose to do it for other reasons.
I for one would like to see the club i support gain depth through smart recruiting to give them a competitive A grade side, and unfortunately we do not see enough players go through our ranks to keep both sides stocked up to a competitive level.
It is difficult to stock both As & Bs with all local players nowdays as there is other sports to compete with ;soccer, hockey and basketball

Agreed, in fact i think if you recruit the right sort of players the local kids get a lot of benefit from it.

Anywho.....my tips this week
(would've tipped the creeks)
Goolwa v Pongy
Willunga v Mclaren
Victor v Compass
Yank v bays

No certainties this week and the home ground advantage will be the factor in pretty much all games. Lov'n how close the league is this year!!!!

Not sure if any of that was aimed at me luva, but I certainly wasnt bagging clubs for recruiting....I've not hidden the fact that I'm a VHFC person (and proud of it ;) ) and I played in the 90's - so that would rather hypocritical. Yes we recruited - like many other clubs did - we just did it better and smarter. The town of Victor has grown substantially in the past 20 years but we would still really struggle to field 2 teams without recruits. As you say, there are plenty of other things for blokes to do nowadays - not just sports - more like PC, PS3, Wii etc etc.

I thought this was a good place to raise a topic of conversation about club culture and the change in such - this is a forum about footy and the GSFL is it not?

this weeks picks

very biased here so fingers crossed:
the mighty Compass over Victor by a goal

Goolwa easily over Myponga about 5 goals
Willunga to bounce back and polish off McLarens in a great game
Yank only because it is at home against the Bays in a close one a couple of goals

and I would have picked the Creeks against strath also .. could not believe the score
well done to strath and looks like again the measuring stick

and a bit of wintry weather on saturday be freezing at Victor brrrrr

cos it never rains at compass!!

Victor to beat Compass - expecting a hard slog. Victor havent played any decent footy yet so I hope they will start to step up.
Goolwa to beat Pongy - Congrats LF!
Willunga to beat Mclaren - expect a reaction after being towelled up by Creeks
Yank to beat Bays - Glenelg play Sunday so McGregor/Massie should be available, but I still think Yank at home.

Lang Ck O'Niel Luke 2 (Hasn't played)
Lang Ck Feast Simon 2 (playing)
Lang Ck Sherwood Paul 2 (No interstate)
Lang Ck Moore Ben 1 (playing)
Lang Ck Sandercock Cameron 2 (cleared to keith wouldn't play a's anyway)
Lang Ck McGregor Lachlan 2 (playing)
Lang Ck Basir Adam 2 (playing)
Lang Ck Kellock Jarrod 4 (playing)
Lang Ck Jordon Rhys 2 (cleared back to callington)
Lang Ck Hately Tom 3 (playing)
Lang Ck Williams S 3 (playing in the 2's)
Lang Ck Butler Ryan 3
(playing)

The creek when full strength v willunga played with 17points had 2 senior colts play to bring them down to 15pts. Used 14pts v strath with no moore and feast playing. Interesting to see that sean williams who played in a grade premiership for strath last year cant sneak in because of the points having to play in the 2's, thats the risk you take i suppose leaving clubs.

Strath had a good team effort v creek used the ball better and were a lot cleaner. Ben warren was well held all night by hickey had only a handful of touches, struggled for other targets up fwd. Creek definately got some pace in there team this year look out for the little 17(butler?) with the orange boots quicker than mcgregor. Creek still the team to beat you put in moore, feast, hill, randell follett into that team missing from last week, they won't have many weaknesses.
Good luck on your 150th on the weekend LF hope you have a win!!

Victor over Compass - Expected some better results from Compass in the early part - 8 goal
Pies over Larks - With the influx of new players and seemingly on the right track a good showing in rd 1 - 8 goal
Willunga over McLaren - Not sure when Willunga's last pantsing was but certainly don't seem to be the force they once were, McLaren definately on the improve, gonna be closer than previous encounters - 5 goal
Bays over Yank - Looks like their recruiting drive is going to pay off, consider Victor to be well around the mark and to nearly roll them has me leaning towards them, even though it's at Yank.

Thanks for that kitm.

What is the go down at Strath? 33 clearances out, by far the most - 7 of those on 28/4. That includes juniors of course -Do you just have lots of excess players compared to the other clubs?

well done to LF on his 150th today. surely the boys get the job done and get the points for the big fella. today is another test for the bays and will show where we are at. when we last made the GF in 2005 i think we lost to yank other there and they finished in the bottom two that year. they are always hard to beat over there. so after nearly rolling victor last game it will be another good yard stick as to see how competitive we will be this year as yank should be around the finals mark again
