Talk on the national game

First game I got to watch due to Fox getting all the Lions' matches. Poor skills definately let the side down, but there's some good signs there.

They definitly had a crack. Just need to tidy up those skills and they'll get a few. Polec is gun, Redden is a beaty and all with out Brown!

Jono Brown tonight on the footy show was very positive about a few of the kids, especially Big Broc.

Will be good to see them get up for a win this week to go in even with the Suns in their clash next week.
Danny Southern telling Plugga he's fat, I'd like to see that!

Rik E Boy wrote:I've watched every game the Lions have played this season and despite them being winless after 4 I reckon they are in a better spot than this time last year when they went unbeaten after four.

Except for one match this year the Lions have been competitive in every game this season. Against Freo they nearly got over the Lion despite losing Staker and Brown. The very last minor round match you would want to lose troops in the duration of the battle would be round one as you aren't match fit yet. Freo have proven themselves to be a pretty good side since then and the Lions were dead stiff.

Against Melbourne and St Kilda victory escaped their clutches due to poor execution and a lack of experience. The Lions should have had a leg up last night as it was pure Qld conditions but it was the more experienced Saints who executed their skills more effiecently.

This team has heart and once Vossy culls the less able players such as guys like Raines (LOL) they might get somewhere. Luenberger is going to be a top ruck prospect even though some of his kicking last night was Blakelike. Redden, Polec, Rich and Rockliff will form the nucleus of an outstanding midfield in the seasons to come. Very impressed by Redden in particular and Polec, despite his slender frame goes in hard. Strangely enough I reckon Simon Black was one of the worst offenders with poor execution - perhaps the Lions' Rolls Royce doesn't appreciate being put in the Garage for a week.

The Lions have a favourable run of matches coming up in the nex couple of weeks and by Round nine they'll have Jonathon Brown and Josh Drummond back to add a touch of class. Adcock in the meantime is leading the side well to ensure there is no temporary leadership vacuum. He has grown in stature and flew the flag for a younger team mate last night.

So while there is plenty of gloom and doom about the Lions I reckon they will face season 2012 with a postitive outlook, as I reckon this season my be gone by the time JB comes back. As for the Saints..well, they were shocking and if they played a side that could hang on to a mark they would have been well beaten. This win and next week's win over what is left of the Cows will merely wallpaper over some sizeable cracks.

REB

Agree with everything there REB, except the bit about Raines.
I've never rated him highly, but he has done a pretty good shutdown job on a lot of key players this season.
He played very well on Nick Dal Santo on Thursday night and apart from that free kick late in the game, had completely shut him out.

You're right about Black though. He is turning the ball over a hell of a lot this season.
I've watched the Lions in 3 of their matches and he's one of the chief culprits.
Maybe it's because we expect so much better of him and we notice it more when he stuffs up now. Not sure.

But they've got some great youngsters coming through and I've told a lot of people not to write them off as wooden spooners this year, because we have a very kind draw through the middle of the year.
Don't play a top 4 contender til about rd 13/14 I think.

Don't know what the big fuss about McCauley is though.
Thought he just lumbered about like a big ape.

He did make alot of skill errors, but good to see him getting the footy. If Browny rates him, enough said!

I think Ryan Lester looks like a capable player too. It was a shame that he copped a bad foot injury which will probably see him out for the rest of the season.

Yeah I thought he might have gotten into trouble for that. They don't normally like it when you leave the ground to put the bump on.

He wasn't carp. He just missed his goals.
Still had a pretty big influence on the game.

Yeah didn't think he was that bad. Like they said during the call other forwards got an opportunity because players peeled off to help cover Brown.

Exactly, and Brown still took quite a few contested marks in spite of this.
Thought young Retzlaff stood up for the Lions yesterday.
Mitch Clark was brilliant - pity those games are few and far between for him.
Black was back to something near his best and Merrett, Patfull and Collier controlled the backlines with ease.
