Mike Selvy selects his greatest england one day eleven

Postby - » Fri Mar 02, 2007 3:03 pm

Gooch
Trescothic
Gower
Pietersen
Collingwood (c)
Flintoff
Botham
C.White
Knott
Gough
Underwood

Knight, Hick, Thorpe, Fairbrother and Lamb unlucky according to Selvy. Adam Hollioke one he said he could have included.

I think the 40 overs from Gough Botham Freddie and underwood are superb. Then you have White and Collingwood to bowl the other 10.

Selvy seemed to rate Whites reverse swing. Surely you would go Willis: http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/england ... 22462.html

Craig White: http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/england ... 22403.html

You could still bat deep with botham 7 and knott 8 with this change.

Then what if you kept with stewart. That would be deep batting.

Stewart: http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/england ... 20372.html

Knott: http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/england ... 15917.html

Collingwood must be somewhat of a doubtful selection. http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/england ... 10772.html

He wouldnt make australias 3rd 11 of all time

Paul Collingwood as captain. WTF!!!! No wonder they knighted him. Am I the only one the sees him as a little over rated? Surely you could not give the captaincy to him....... He's hardly captained England at any level. I would have thought Alan Lamb could have walked into that side at number 4 with Pieterson in at 5. Not saying Collingwood can't play....... Just would have thought Lamb easily the better batsman over a carear. But other than that its a pritty damn good side.

Collingwood captain. LMAO. What a joke. Even being in the side suggests England's stocks have been at best average over the last 36 years. Surely Lamb should be there.

What does it say about English cricket when a player who has been around (comparitively) for 5 minutes can be chosen at Number 4 in the "best ever" team? And yes, Lamb should be in at Number 4.

Collingwood wrong.

Pietersen correct.

Has been super in one day cricket for 2 years averaging over 50. deserves to be there. Unlike Hussey who must wait for his spot pietersen doesnt have as stiffer competition

LAMB was a good test batsman who made 100s v WI in thier prime.
SELVEY is naming a o/d team
Off course he will select PIETERSON in front of LAMB
Playing for 2 years is not 5 minutes.
PIETERSON is the best o/d batsman EG has ever had.
In the WI the taxi drivers outside the staduim will be ducking for cover
when the champ destroys the opposition attacks.

Forget about his eccentric hairsyles, apparent arrogant behaviour etc
and judge his on field performances, which are simply awesome

I don't care what form of the game they are playing, i'd take Gower over Pietersen anyday.

Pietersen has not yet achieved anywhere near what people are expecting him to. Until such time as he does, he has no place in a "Greatest ever" team of any description.

Ricky Ponting is only just earning a place amongst many scribes in Australia's best ever teams, and that is after 11 seasons playing for Australia. Pietersen has been around for 5 minutes in comparison, and at the moment he's an over-rated kid with talent who may or may not make a career for himself. He is not a superstar.

Why wait 10 years to find out
HUSSEY/PIETERSON are stars now, we all know that, lets accept it.
Besides 2 years cricket these days is like playing 5 years cricket on the past

pietersen would be selected in a current world 11 side if it were 2 play 2moro.

Im sre when the real england team gets picked lamb will be in. This is just a journalist.

Pietersen is the best one day batsman england has had.
