Just a hypothetical....

Footy is played on Good Friday for the 1st time and a packed Coopers Stadium has 12,000 come through the gates for a Norwood v Port match under lights. As the crowd was huge its decided that Good Friday footy is here to stay. What would the crowd figure be the following years after that? Will the WAFL get 5000 again next year? After all it will just become another day when a footy match is on just like any other weekend or public holiday.

We cant even consistantly get 10K+ at ANZAC day games anymore, which would draw more than any 'traditional' Good Friday match.
Until laws are changed I cant see this being viable long term.

If done correctly i think it could work, look at the AFL ANZAC game that gets consistent crowd figures no matter how well the teams are going.

I would be happy for a good friday game to be played at Coopers each year between Norwood and Port

oh yeah? where's the grave then?

They did not use graves but buried the dead in caves. Anyway, I think we are getting off topic now. ;)

More like Australia is a nanna country. We are not as progressive as we think unfortunately.

Good Friday footy happening all over the place in country Victoria.
I watched South Mildura v Irymple yesterday. Great day.
Big crowd too - about the same size as their GF crowds.
And it's consistent too. The two clubs alternate the matches at their grounds.
I went two years ago and the crowd was just as big.

Are the bottle shops open on Good Friday in Adelaide these days?
It's all the SANFL's fault.

So why are people saying WA is the nanny state because liquor licences couldn't be had yesterday?
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Having said all that, the liquor laws here are far more restrictive than SA. I was here three years before I realised street drinking was illegal everywhere and not just certain zones. At the footy and venues like the BDO, drinking is restricted to penned off areas. Although the SANFL footy has family friendly areas these days, they're just arbitrary, it's not a liquor licencing restriction.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

With all the comments re Good Friday football, have we ever taken into consideration the thoughts of the players and club officials? It is alright to say that we as spectators want to see it, but should we be forcing players to give up their Good Friday? To those who say it would not force players as they would have the right to choose, how much of a pasting would a player receive for not playing.. from both the club and spectators?
Cheers

Better not play football any day of the year as it will always inconvenience some one.
Nothing makes those who believe in fairy tales any more important than any other fairy tale believer.
Mind you they do think they're more important, hence the issue.

They are already forced to give up their weekend so what difference is one day going to make?

Does any one know if North Adelaide and WWT trained on Friday night as per normal SANFL weekly routines????

And what about the catering staff both those who deliver the pies and beers to the ovals and those who serve the pies and beers at the ovals? Can they request not to work on a Good Friday game?

Or are you willing to go without pies and beers at a Good Friday game?

No one HAS too work on a public holiday. There are plenty of people that would be willing to work and get some good coin.
