I voted libs last election but Rann won by heaps in my electorate.

I was very dissappointed in my electorate.

THE name of the Labor MP charged with child pornography offences will remain a state secret for months thanks to a 35-year-old law.
Media reporting of alleged sex crimes is restricted by a section introduced in 1976 to the Evidence Act (1929) - the same legislation used to impose suppression orders.

The media may not publish any evidence tendered, or submission made, in the Magistrates Court relating to an alleged sex offence.

It is further banned from naming any person charged with an offence, and must not identify anyone alleged to be a victim.

The act defines a sex crime as "any offence involving sexual exploitation or abuse of a child, or exploitation of a child as an object of prurient interest".

Individuals who breach the law can be fined a maximum $10,000, while corporations face a $120,000 fine.

The act says alleged offenders can only be named once they have entered a plea - be it guilty or not guilty - to the charges, and have been remanded for either sentence or trial.

The MP is due to appear in court again on May 20, when a magistrate will organise a schedule for the case.

Usually, prosecutors are given between four and six weeks to provide declarations - summaries of the evidence to be used at trial - to defence counsel.

Once those papers are handed over, alleged offenders are usually required to enter a plea to the charges within six weeks.

After the pleas have been entered, the alleged offender can be publicly identified provided the court does not impose any additional suppression orders

Not sure why you can't discuss a topic that is all over the news. As long as the suspects name isnt published and details of the evidence aren't discussed, it is no problem.

Anyway, Rann's government will be annihilated at the next election. Hopefully the Libs can be more progressive for SA, which has been treading water for too many years. It's about time mining became a focus. Hospitals, football stadiums and infrastructure will all follow.

The rise and apparent fall of this politician highlights all that is wrong with the Labor party.

A fella that has done nothing in his life other than been a faithful patsy for the SDA union, has little real world experience, and is unknown in the electorate and his own constituency.

His rapid rise is solely due to being a lemming for Don Farrell.

The quote in today's Advertiser says it all ... things like ... the people they send into Parliament couldn't win a council election, and the faction bosses wouldn't know a voter if they fell over one.

If Labor persist with being ruled by the backroom union thugs then they will get their just desserts, both here in SA and federally, like they have recently experienced in Vic and NSW.

I think they're good points, dedja.

Labor have no show at the next election unless they totally refresh, but when Weatherill can't become leader because he's from the wrong faction, there's a major problem and it lets down all the decent party supporters. You're right, many get into parliament when they shouldn't and that goes for both sides.

The Government is highly unpopular ATM and it's not really because of policy issues, IMO. It's more the (correct?) perception that they've become arrogant and aren't listening. They were very lucky to survive the last election and then said they'd listen to the people, but immediately went into hibernation.

By promoting Jay to the leadership, Labor would be sending a message to all that they're not beholden to the factions and they would have their best chance for survival and regeneration.

Only problem is that the factions won't allow it ... a catch22 that they'll be stuck with forever unless someone has the balls to break it open.

With 24% of the primaries I'd say the proverbial deck-chairs are in for a bit of shuffling. Rann's is by no means set in cement.

I'm not sure its JUST the SA Labor govt that is the laughing stock of the country. Pretty much Labor as a whole has lost focus in recent years, although admittedly NSW and SA are probably the 2 best examples.

May not be long until the Libs/coalition hold govt in every jurisdiction in the country; it wasn't that long ago since that was the case with the ALP.

I think it currently stands for keeping a low profile and letting the ALP self-destruct.
And, of course, not announcing policies far enough a head of the election to let the ALP have time to come up with their own variations based on them, as they did last time.

They have very few policies and what they do have is not subject to any analysis at all.

While we debate the carbon tax, the Libs policy is to spend a lot of money (unfunded) tom pay the polluters to cut down emissions.

They announced a $430 million boost to mental health services, but forgot(?) to say how it would be funded.

Their infrastructure policy says they're in favour of infrastructure
