What Aust XI would you be prepared to put your house on if it had to match up against that ... Might put Alderman's potential spot in jeapordy (altho I would question it anyway unless the side was playing England in England). The Windies tended to tonk Alderman around pretty easily.

The fact that a guy the quality of Walsh misses out on that side is just incredible. It's just frightening to think how good the fast bowling stocks of the WI's once were. Throw in guys like Croft, Bishop etc. and what an awesome lineup.

When a bloke who took over 500 test wickets is carrying the drinks I think you know what the quality of the side is. But looking at that bowling line up you just couldn't find room for him.(Walsh) Maybe drop Richardson and play 5 quicks. Imagine facing a bowling line containing 5 of the best 10 fast bowlers of all time. :-s

No need to play the 5th quick. He wouldn't get a bowl.

Didn't see a lot of Richardson i assume dasher.

thats why i commented on his stats not his style

i saw him tour aus 92/93 one dayers a cupla times thereafter and reckon he is the weakness in that otherwise powerful top 6.

Yep, Roberts was the other one. Bishop, before his back injury was probably the quickest of a very frightening bunch. I am lucky to have watched a lot of cricket footage in my time and these guys were just awesome.

Richie Richardson's average suffered because of a couple of lean series particularly late in his career, but he was one of the finest attacking players i have seen. Certainly not a weak link in any top 6.

Second test in 1991 series in the Carribean Richardson absolutely smashed us around in scoring 182. Brutal stuff. He ended up being their captain and is regarded as one of their better players of all time. All West Indian batting averages are a little less than you might expect maybe because they played a very attacking style. They weren't a team that liked to go out and bat for 2 days and score 700. They seemed to prefer to have a smash and then launch their bowlers on you. When you had to face that bowling line up any score over 300 was tough work to compete with:

Greenidge 44.72
Haynes 42.29
Richards 50.23
Lloyd 46.79
Lara 53.17

Besides if he is over-rated - who comes in to the team in his place?

yeah uv convinced me im harsh. I remmber he went in an opened in the 95 series in the windies. I agree he's the clear choice of 6th player. Its no disgrace to be 6th in that list but i think the greenige haynes combo probably will go down as greater than richie richardson.

Your sarcasm is clear but whilst he was not in the top echelon of opening batsmen, Graeme Wood was no mug.

He certainly was an excellent player of pace bowling and took it up to the West Indies pace battery for WA and Australia in the 80's where lesser men succumbed. His Test century in Perth against Ambrose, Patterson, Bishop and co in Perth in 1988 was a fantastic knock.
