The Bye

Postby whufc » Sun Apr 10, 2011 10:35 am

2011 is the first season in many years that the AFL has had to have the bye every week of the season.

So far Gold Coast had the bye in Round 1 and were smashed by Carlton in Round 2 maybe not unexpected.

Then Adelaide's form line looked the goods in round 1 beating Hawthorn only to get smashed by a side in Round 3 who couldnt beat Brisbane.

So far 2 teams coming off the bye and 2 easily losses.

This will be interesting to see how it pans out for the rest of the year, can the coaches have theire teams up* after a week off.

Next week we have North Melbourne taking on Fremantle over at Subi so you would think the trend would continue.

You can read too much into this.

Round Two - A team fields 12 debutants against a side that is aiming to win at least one final this season.
Round Three - Adelaide have been overrated just because their draw looks soft. That doesn't help you beat a side that is very resilient and is underrated this season. I got sucked in too I picked the Crows but Freo are tough opposition this year.
Round Four - North making a second trip to Subi in Four rounds.

The thing to remember with Adelaide in round 1 was they were pumped with the 20 year celebrations, special occasion, etc. It reminded me of the 1st game in 1991, nobody would have beaten Adelaide that day. The following week they were beaten. Hard to psyche yourself up for a big match and then sustain the effort.

Agree with REB. I don't thinkl GC, Adel or NM will be troubling too many sides this year. Not sure I'd want to be coming up against Collingwood after they have a week off.

Lets all face it.

The bye sucks.

I personally think the bye messes up momentum.

The sooner we bring in team 18 the better.

Goose....

Why is it, after Adelaide had the bye in Round 2, why do they play home in Round 3? Surely you have a bye then you travel, not the other way 'round?

6 Rounds in and no team coming off the bye has beat a team that played the week before.

Something to think about when tipping or betting?

West Coast d Melb, both coming off the bye, wouldn't have expected the Dees to win though over there anyway.

As for the other results after the bye, i dont think too many upsets. Wouldn't read much into it.

I've commented on this previously, but there seems to be a large amount of games where the team that has just had the bye plays at home the following week. Sure, it would be tough to work the fixture out, but surely if you have a bye you travel the week after?

They usually try and get the bye to coincide with having an away game before hand, not after wards dont they?

It's probably a revenue thing, I'd imagine that clubs need two hame matches a month to balance out their books.

Well I reckon that trend might end this week when the Cats play North at Cat Land.

Does anyone remember the "Match Ratio" that was last used when a bye was in vogue?

LOL. I was looking for it last night watching one of the fox shows when they showed the ladder, hadn't looked at a ladder so far this season.
