Christ I had Border instead of Symonds, and I still reckon AB was a better bat, his throwing in the ring was as good if not better than Symonds, and his spinners better. Symonds better ground fielder and out fielder i.e more versatile in the field than AB and obviously a better bowler of meds.

Can't think of many better 100s in one-day cricket than AB's (125*) against the Windies (Walsh, Holding, Garner, Marshall compare thosse to the paki pie throwers when Symonds made his World Cup ton) in the first final of 84-85 to give us a 1-0 lead.

AB I reckon you're stiff to miss out

I missed symonds. Border and G chappel are the most unlucky followed by hussey and cmcdermott

Agreed. Bevan's role as a one day player has been grossly over-rated. A good handy player, but that's all.

To suggest Bevan was A: a better player or B: had a bigger impact on Australian cricket, is just ludicrous.

No Border that is simply staggering,I am amazed.I have some questions over Brett Lee to be honest and wonder what his R/R over his career is compared to other quicks especially McDermott. Symonds out Border In for me at this stage.Will give the Lee thing some thought

That was almost my exact team except I had Hussey in for Symonds.

Bevan was a brilliant one day cricketer. He changed the way the game was played (for better or worse) with regards to low risk run making through the middle to late overs. His stats back him up very favourably as well.

Border and Greg Chappell are legends of the game. Hussey is better than bevan he does everything bevan can do and more. I do accept the argument hussey hasnt been around long enough

Spot on. Not fit to shine AB's or Chappell's boots. Could you seriously imagine Bevan facing up to Andy Roberts, Wayne Daniel, Colin Croft, Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner and Micheal Holding under the match conditions that were prevalent during Border's time? A joke.

Just checked what I posted in the other forum a few weeks back, and my team is exactly as the selectors have picked. I had Symonds above Bevan in the batting order though, but everything else was identical!

Didn't pick a 12th man in my team though - so missed Chappell.

I wouldn't have symonds in my side. Hasn't quite made it as a player. Has to get the bigger scores on a more regular basis not a 50+ score every 10 innings. Also needs to take more wickets to be a real allrounder.

In my original team I had McDermott instead of Lee and O'Donnell instead of Symonds but the rest was the same and I can live with those changes. I think it's easy to confuse Allan Border the great test cricketer and captain with AB the one day player. Yes, the 125 against the West Indies was a brilliant innings ... but I am struggling to come up with another. However, Bevan had many significant match winning innings and the greatest compliment I heard Mike Hussey receive was the he is "the next Michael Bevan".
That's not to say AB was not a good one-day cricketer ..... just that if I was picking a side to go out in a one-day match and give me the best opportunity to win I would prefer to have Bevan over Border as a batsman.
The greatest test team over the last 30 years would be a completely different matter and AB would be one of my first picks.

Very surprised Lee got in to the team. Would have preferred O'Donnell because he was the pioneer of the slower ball and was a better batsman, or alternatively McDermott.
