Just a tick over 4100 at Richmond tonight, which is a good crowd. Scott Turner (West Football Director) told me pre-game they would have been happy with 3,000 - 3,500.

Just got back from the game oh boy we were bad but full credit to Westies thay beat us across the ground and, dare I say it, the margin should have been more such was Wests dominance. But beware the rest of the comp we will bounce back from tonight lookout come finals time...

All credit to the bloods, ran all over the top of the dogs who look a little under done...free kick count 37 to 27 leaves a little bit to be desired,few touchy ones for both teams,let them play boys it's better for the game...

Just a suggestion to the west Adelaide officials, it may be time to up grade your PA system...not sure if it's much use at the moment

Yeah I noticed that during the third quarter when it carked it.

Not trolling here but jeeze I hope we don't have centrals on a Friday night game again. They had some Gerald in the bar right to the end, although I did have some fun moving them out the bar
On the contrary, was good seeing so many centrals supporters come In and support the bloods despite the big loss. Nit sure if all clubs are like that but I do hope so.

Hartlett has been told from the doctors he has a fractured ankle but will be confirmed by the X-rays tomorrow. Big loss he will. Our side is great structurally at the moment! Good game but centrals will be back

Friday night under lights at City Mazda is becoming something to really look forward to for Bloods’ fans and the game against Centrals turned into a celebration for the faithful. It was almost proof of the transition of a team from the depths to the realization that they’ve taken a step towards being recognized as a genuine challenger.

Perhaps it was the first time for many years that West fans arrived for a game against Central thinking they could win and win they did. As always, there were factors to be kept in mind. I watched the Reserves, where a strong Central side, with O’Hara outstanding and a host of league probables up and about, played all over an also strong West outfit. There were ominous signs there, however, of a different fitness level between the teams. West, with no interchange, finished all over a weakening Dogs’ side to reduce a squillion points deficit to only 20 at the end. No doubt there were many Central players who will be better for the run and who we’ll see in the league side very soon.

After the mandatory start of 4 ball-ups followed by a free to sort it out, the game settled down into a dour struggle in the first quarter. Central, with the aid of the breeze, found itself on the defensive as West ran the ball and attacked, although their delivery into the forward 50 was poor and Central’s defence held firm. After that, though, it was all West, a different West, a tough and disciplined West. The week before, the Bloods had lost discipline in the second quarter and conceded a host of free kicks as a result. This second quarter was very similar, but it was a usually disciplined Central team who appeared to lose that discipline. As a result, West supporters, who had been used to the statistical wrong end of the umpiring stick for years, were stunned as their team got the best run from the umpires they’d seen for years. It didn’t matter much, though, as a fiercely committed West seemed to be at the bottom of every pack and hard and low at every ball. Central also appeared stunned, as if this wasn’t the West side they’d had no trouble shrugging off with little effort for years.

The rest of the game followed that pattern, except that the difference between the sides grew, both on the scoreboard and psychologically, with the final result perhaps slightly flattering Central on the night.

Are Central in trouble. Of course not. It’s their first game, but the first time they’ve lost that first game for 10 years, subject to spelly telling me otherwise. It’s also their lowest score against West, with the same proviso. They have several players to come back in, good players and they looked unusually rusty. There are some problem spots, though. I’ve long thought that McKenzie was just about their most important player and ruck looked a big problem last night. West had lost Moran with illness and rucked forward Daniel Webb and Ryan Willits. Willits was excellent and Webb, as well as taking some big grabs up forward, jumped all over Sutherland and Milne at the stoppages.

Best players? James Ezard was sensational. Plenty of the footy, 10 tackles, 3 goals, you name it, he did it. I’m reluctant to go any more overboard than usual about Ryan Ferguson, but he was named best at club presentations. I think he started on Westhoff and I’m not sure if Roy Laird made a change there, but Ferguson dominated all night. Aaron Fielke ran with James Boyd and was terrific and David Piasente continued his resurgence. Shane Birss? Outstanding. It wasn’t a night for best players, although Havelberg kicked 3 goals for Central. It was a night to admire a switched on, totally committed West side who were fierce at every contest and played for each other. All played well.

Central will reorganize after that effort, but will need to. West will rest several players and look forward to playing Ainslie next week, before facing Sturt at City Mazda.

I was particularly pleased with the way Westies ran out the game. Their last Q effort was simply sensational. The run out of defence, a marvelous tackle by Daniel Caire, the competitiveness of Ryan Willets in ruck, a wonderful mark by Daniel Webb in front of the grandstand, etc. They could have coasted in the last but they actually lifted the tempo and booted 5 goals to Centrals 1.

The radical change in game plan from last year is dramatic and makes for much more attractive and successful footy. In our first 2 matches we’ve kicked 17 and 14 goals, this from a team that struggled to kick ten per game last year. This turnaround cannot be attributed to ‘gun’ recruit Brad fisher as he has only got 4 of those 31 so a much more rounded team effort.

With a number of injuries our depth will be tested quite early in the season and hopefully this will provide opportunities for younger players.

With Ezard running into some much needed form, Birss starting to assert himself by using handball to such positive effect and Macreadie providing the toughness our midfield is looking much better than 2010. Interesting to see how Jonno Beech goes in defence as he has proved to be a useful goalkicker when playing on the wing or forward. Maybe if Green or Bricknell come back he could be released to do some damage up forward.

The last time we played the Dogs they beat us by around 11 goals. This time we repaid the result – a 22 gl turnaround?! (Let’s not get too carried away). After all they have beaten us in 19 of our last 20 matches.

Great night at the footy. Centrals looked switched on in the warm up, I was in awe of their skills. Didnt miss a target, didnt drop a ball. Then the siren sound and it changed completely. The pressure from the Bloods on the ball and ball carrier was the best I can remember. In the second quarter, a Jimmy Ezard passage had to been seen to be believed. I doubt those on the grandstand side would have seen it. He smothered the ball to keep in the area, then laid 4 bone crunching tackles in a row then as Centrals managed to clear the ball out of the area he sprinted 15 metres and dived full length to try and smother another ball...but was just too late. Made the hair on the back of my neck stand up the way he just pushed himself for the team.

Really like Willits, Birss,Sylverster and Pettigrews' games. Not big stats or widely noted by gee they were great.

For the Dogs, doesnt Sutherland cover the ground well for a big bloke?

Little talk of the umpires on here. I thought the difference of the free kicks was warrented as we were first at the ball and the Dogs players were getting frustrated. The were even arguing amongst themselves in the last quarter.

That happens a fair bit between our players, but apparently all the players know to accept it and get on with things.

and agree the umpires had no impact on the result, it would have been wrong if the free kick count was even as West were first to the ball on 90% of occasions.
