Hey Guys, enjoy reading all your posts and was just wondering what you all think about the usefulness of trial games to a hill club.

Havn't been playing long but from what i see trial games rarely see the regular season team play together due to clashes with cricket or whatever and so i wonder what real use are they? Players risk injury for what seems like just a chance to slighly increase the fitness of a side. Also how much do you take away from the results of the matches?

You take nothing away from the result...but there is no substitute for match fitness!

Good point, trials can set up fringe players to show you what they have aswell as get blokes used to being smacked around the ear.

Wouldn't take any results of trial games seriously, but I reckon they still definitely have their place in hills footy. Clubs can play uncleared players, which gives both player and club a chance to check compatibility. How many players have been lured to a club with the promise of great things pre-season, only to sign up and find it isn't all it's made out to be? Also gives the club a chance to weed out 'talked up' recruits they've never seen who may turn out to be useless once $ have been organised. Potential players with families can bring the missus and kids along to see to see how they'd fit in, with no obligation. Home trials are also a great financial spring-board with which to start the season. Some Hills clubs, particularly those in Country Div, are incredibly impoverished in March, so bar and canteen takings can set the ball bouncing. It's also a good time for Team Managers to connect with players to make sure all have shorts, jocks and socks etc. for the first round. I've known of clubs who have kicked off a minor round without any trials, and the preceeding debacle in the change-rooms on the day has been pretty stressful for all. Doesn't matter if those involved in cricket are missing. If they're still involved in finals, they're probably not lacking in match fitness anyway. Injuries are always a possibility but I think the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

Even though he is a veteran, he can definitely play! Has been approached by plenty of teams, from div one through to a couple of crappy clubs in the Hills, Bridgewater I think it was!

Yeh gold tooth i did change teams, but because i had soooo much footy and it is hell serious i decided to play cricket for fun not for sheep stations, plus i wasnt really friends with hahndorf ppl

Another player to watch this year for Mt. Lofty could be young Jonothan "Life Saver" Downes.
Son of the former Sturt Legend and Mt. Lofty premiership Captain, Andrew Downes.
The kid has had a shocking run with injuries but he is looking amillion bucks on the training track!

If your talking about that big fella James/Jason/Jack (not quite sure) Baylis then you are spot on, he is a goer. Very keenly sought after by a lot of clubs! Top bloke aswell I hear, hasn't he lobbed at Encounter bay? Whats the connection there?

It's his first senior coaching gig, very green, so it will be an interesting year for the Bays. He's got a lot of contacts and rates himself pretty highly!!

Rates himself pretty highly? Please explain briefly, I read on a previous thread that this was his first senior year but he knows his stuff and the boys have all taken to him well. For the record contacts really dont mean much at all, I think we all agree that you can put together a stunning line up but if you cant get the best out of them then thats about as useful as tits on a ball. Being green isnt all that bad, all coaches start somewhere - sink or swim i reckon.

shanty did speak to this baylis bloke as he talked himself into being a very good player, even if he talks jibberish some still understand him!
connection with encounter is he nows the coach really well. possible link with basketball.
think panther32 or spider as known by others may be heading to same club as baylis.
but than again baylis probably is a little bit 2 old for hills footy!

they 2 must have room on the veterans list! nah will be a good pick up as long as his recent engagement dosn't put him of his game!
