It was a complete failure as most predicted. I doubt it brought any Power fans back to the Magpies as most didn't arrive early enough and all it did was p--s off the SANFL supporters. The crowd number did not receive a boost and the SANFL missed out on their chance to promote a big game as a season opener. I'd like to know how anyone could say it was a success.

How ?
PA V NW football park 2/4/2011
NW V PA norwood oval 20/5/2011
NW V PA norwood oval 30/7/2011

It has definitely benefitted NW
NW got the 2 premiership points, thats the only thing that counts
Had this first game been at Alberton, who knows, perhaps PA may have won

Not sure the remainder of the draw has any relevance, but respect your thoughts mate .. Looking at it as an isolated game i dont think there was really any benefit for us at all, maybe by seasons end the run at AAMI might have proved helpful but who knows

Atmosphere for the SANFL match was dull. Not many there at the start of the match and plenty leaving at the end of the match. Not good for SANFL footy.

Going by these comments I might just decide to go to the Sturt curtain raiser after all, I think I'll enjoy the laughable planning put in place to accommodate the SANFL supporters. Might be a good lesson in how not to do things.
The outcome of yesterdays farcical experiment is that the PAFC have just isolated themselves even more. Moving to AO might make a difference for a few years but not after that, end result is that their supporter base isn't big enough and those that do don't do it often enough.

Out of interest, is the club (Norwood) going to be formally asking questions of the SANFL over this debacle?

They should.....

Sad thing is if this was played at Norwood Oval on a Friday night they would have got 6000 plus in the crowd.
Is out of change.....thanks Cambridge Clarrie!!!

I wonder just what sort of canvassing of Power, Magpies and SANFL supporters was done by the SANFL & PAFC as to how this brainwave of an idea would be recieved. None would be my guess.

maybe at the moment, but there is a hell of a lot more kids wearing Swampies guernseys to training than the Crows, I think you'll find that the supporter numbers at games might change as the kids grow up

That's not actually a silly suggestion.

Curtain raisers were unpopular 10 years ago, so see no reason why they would be popular now. Especially given the match finishes an hour before the AFL game starts. It's not as if you are going to get a large crowd gather for the last quarter like you do in the SANFL double header finals.

As many have pointed out here, I think they're trying to increase the Power crowd. Fail.

I would like to see the SANFL start their season the week before the AFL starts. If this means increasing to a 25 round season so they can still have their GF the week after the AFL GF then so be it. That's still only 22 games per club and you'd only have 3 teams having the bye at the same time on one round of the season. Two extra rounds in good weather and the 1st round being played without any AFL competition - plus you've got all the AFL players slightly underdone wanting to play a game of SANFL so you can potentially attract new people to come and watch SANFL because of that.

Having Port vs Norwood at 11:30am as a curtain raiser to a Power game at AAMI Stadium to kick off the SANFL season was a disgraceful decision.

I agree Aerie, 22 matches is good; play one less trial match - only one more weekend used.

Cue the Spelly Stats, yet one would suggest this figure is well below what they were looking for today, especially given the number of free tickets that were given out to those that signed up for the One Port Adelaide Website and the numbers of tickets given out to the Amateur footy league clubs around the city - and country areas to distribute, my local club were offered 30 tickets, 3 were taken up.

Didnt get the attendance they were after and cost the SANFL the chance to open the round with a high attendance at a Suburban venue as has been the case in previous years.

If the SANFL are serious about getting numbers through the gate then lets see them have a Port Game this season on Friday night at Adelaide Oval, if it works and Port get the 30 000 they want then its game on for the Power, if it fails and we get the 23k again, the clearly its apparent where the future of the next State Government funded 530mil should go.

Hopefully the SANFL use the opportunity to wake up to the fact that much more needs to be done that just putting on an SANFL match to get numbers in through the gate. Will be interesting to see if they respond with anything, or simply continue to leave their heads stuck firmly in the sand of denial.

wasnt that the crowd figure for the the AFL game?

FFS.....now we can't decide which Port Adelaide gets the attendance ;)

Another strange "decision" was not to open the gates until 11am - 15 minutes before the start of the game.

Yep Sqwark, doesn't surprise me.
On SANFL Grand Final Day the gates are opened as the match starts, so the parents, family, friends and supporters of clubs playing in U18s GF miss the first 10 minutes of play, the banners and the warm ups
