From what I saw on the telly, agree with all these comments. It seemed the sort of footy back 5 years ago when the SANFL was better to watch than the AFL. Was great to see the teams attacking and kick some good scores, reasonably good skills for Round 1, and some common sense umpiring generally letting a bit of incidental contact and physicality go.

With possibly their best team since 2003 Westies started the 2011 season with a tough win over North. Westies lead for most of the contest but North fought back in the last Q to hit the front. To their credit, Westies fought back to win by 9 pts, outscoring NA 4 gls to 3 in a tight last Q.
Q by Q scores:
1Q WA 5.3, NA 1.3, 2Q WA 8.4, NA 8.6, 3Q WA 13.6, NA 12.9, Final score, WA 17.9, NA 15.12.
While both sides made plenty of mistakes it was a pretty free-flowing game and enjoyable to watch in close to perfect conditions.
NA had won the last 8 games at Prospect so the win was special for the Bloods. They played a 'play on at all costs' style with an open forward line. Brad Fisher started his SANFL career with 4 great goals and looks to be a creative and skillful player with good hands and a straight kick.
A Hartlett and Pettigrew played forward and with Brad Fisher kicked 8 between them. Ben Fisher (182cm) played on Nick Gill (193cm) and this mismatch resulted in Gill booting 3 early goals.
While it was a pretty even team effort, VFL recruit Ben Macreadie was probably our most consistent player in his first game. He is tough and starts a lot of moves and kicked 2 gls, one in the crucial last Q. Fisher for his 4 gls, Schmidt was busy, Morris did some good things and the team seemed to play better with Moran in ruck. Silvester was his usual cool, calm and collected self. H Hartlett was quiet, Pettigrew dropped out of the game after 2 first Q goals and both will probably play with us next week.
The seconds ran out easy winners 21.10 to 12.8 to make the trip all the more worthwhile. This team has several players pressing for senior selection. Ahmat-Watkins looks classy, Sam Ezard isn't too far away and players like N Caruso, Shannon Green and Bricknell would consider themselves unlucky to be playing at this level. Webb, Anderson S Blesing also played in this game with Davenport taken by the Power.
The officiating was of a low standard with North scoring from a number of pedantic decisions and 25m penalties.

ill cop that west were a tad better, esp ferg outlasting allers in an absolutely absorbing duel, and that lil pesky number 10 ozzing class, but cmon to suggest that north got the run of the green is bulllshit.

Yep. Andy Collins admitted that especially in the 2nd quarter his team gave away too many unnecessary frees. Couldn't see a lot wrong with the umpiring today.

Best at the cluc presso's for North
1Matt Wright
2 Cain Ackland
3 Luke Teasdale

Teasdale & Gill tied for the supporters award, FWIW in that award my vote went to Daniel Motlop, it was the best team game I've seen him play

I read/heard/watched that MacReadie was pretty good for the Bloods today (as he has been in their trials) but yet he failed to make the best players list in Doug Robertson's match review on Localfootysa?

I only watched the last half on tv today.

But reading all posts on this thread, i think its honestly the first time that iv read a match review, where no one is bagging the umpires, the opposition clubs, and happy with the teams effort. Hopefully the SAFooty community takes note of the bloods and roosters supporters from this game (allbeit, the umpires and teams have to keep this up as well). I also noticed, that all West supporters think Alleway got the better of Ferg, and North thinks Ferg got the better. Usually the other way around isnt it?

Well done on the win bloods. Schmidts clearance work in the second half was superb. Birss was good. Macreadies hard ball gets and composure was superb. Hamish Hartlett should spend another week with us, but than again, the power are struggling. Either side could have won this game, but a fair game, and a good style of footy to watch. Hopefully the young north fella is alright. And young Teasdale and Motlop both unlucky not to get second and third best respectively IMO from the second half

Phil, why was it great to see Doug Robertson back reporting on the SANFL ?

He has always been a joke with virtually NO IDEA and it was a blessing for Footy followers when he got moved to Crime reports or whatever !!!!!
- This is backed up by your comment re his assessment of MacReadie's game

ps. I was pleasantly surprised at North's form today as on paper West definitely had a better line-up.

Just before half time I thought Mcreadie was a dud recruit. His last qtr was too good unfortunately. West have found a player. Tough also.
