For anyone remotely interested, Smithfield will be fielding a side this season, wont be a strong one but they will have around 20 for the first game, possibly more.

Great work. A better outcome than disappearing completely. Much easier to build on something that has a foundation, rather than starting from scratch

but not heaps enough for two sides?
was it a numbers problem or $ that caused smithfield to slide down to c1?

Heaps: 20 odd.
Average age: 40.
Skill level: ok.
Fitness level: poor.
Heart: huge.

All the way along I've maintained the truth. Here is the story:
Had enough for an A grade, would've been a decent side, had bugger all for a B grade, can't compete in div 5 without ressies.
The coach resigned and then the poachers pounced, it was obvious we weren't going to fill two sides, most A graders didn't want to play in a C grade comp so they dispersed to other clubs around the place.
The sports and social club needed senior footy there to avoid losing the oval to some soccer clubs that were hot on to the council, a few older heads got together and did a big push to at least get a team on the park.
They've had 3 trainings, 15 at the first, 19 at the second and 20ish at the 3rd. They are old, they are slow, they are overweight but they are out ther to keep the club afloat.
So in essence, these guys wouldn't have played A5 reserves, the C grade name tag sounded more appealling and the later start, they are more of a social group and a few first-timers, they might pick up a few who's clearances have been refused or those that just wanted to play for Smithfield.

Don't ask questions in riddles finn, I'm quite happy to answer honestly and concise no matter what the question is, nothing to hide, not glory seeking.

was wondering what the story was - and a very good answer in response mr macqueen.

here's hoping that the club manages to survive and gets back up to where it was before to reward the effort, spirit (club and community) and thought that has obviously gone into this year's side.

good luck for tomorrow v eastern park

Thankyou, they have a great core of people as the driving force, I'm not there anymore either but I do wish them well, I'm more involved with the cricket out there, I endeavour to play a game or two during the season though.
The positives are:
They have a team.
They will all pay their way.
They are a very social group and will support the club on match days and evenings.
They will build a foundation for future years and they wont allow any onfield thuggery.
