I was always Grant Coffee when playing 'marks up' with my younger brothers in the back yard...

On the odd occassion I remember being Phil Lounder because my name is Phil and I was a ruckman (but never had a moustache at 12 or 13 !!!)

Not I, I wanted to mark like Cornesy.

We never seemed to lose GFs to Port in my backyard....

We should have had a game, I liked to be Grave Danger :)

What, and hit me so in-effectively as Granger did to Cornes so I get straight up again and play on??

Grave Danger as tough as wet toilet paper, as you notice he is waits until Cornes isn't looking before he hits him. Is there any vision of Granger hitting anyone when they are looking??
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Granger was a very strong man, but you're right, he was a sniper, not a genuie tough player. It was this mixture that made him a danger to others on the field. He shaped up to Jim Thiel one day when Thiel wasn't looking, Thiel saw him out the corner of the eye and went to take him on .. Granger backed away.

I had this in my memory bank when I played a game of basketball against him not long after. He belted me under the basket and it hurt, but I knew if I let him get away with it, he'd keep doing it, so I belted him back. He never came near me after that. :)

Strong .... yes, tough .... no.

And of course Sturt never lost a game in a decade of back yard imaginary games - they could beat all SANFL & VFL & WAFL teams and even the All Australian Teams of 1969 & 1972. Damn good side my Double Blues.

awesome, my Double Blues side was damn good also, maybe a couple of years after yours though
I was Baggy, Flash, Jumbo Prince through primary days, and Gary Hardeman only had a fleeting stint but as an early high school student he was my fave, fantastic player

maybe my Double Blues team should give your Double Blues team a game

Well we would have to share a lot of players like Davies,Bagshaw,Nunan,Graham,Casey,Winter,Howard. Another problem for me is that the home ground of my old Double Blues side has since been largely transformed into a swimming pool by the new owners of my old backyard so my spiritual home ground is no more. We just have to be content with the knowledge that our respective backyard games were pure magic and will live on forever!

Carey or Kernahan, Cornes when I was a little tacker
2017, 2019 & 2020 PREMIERS
RICHMOND, RICHMOND, RICHMOND.

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

Any number of Port players over the years; Ebert, Phillips, Sorrell, Eckermann, Russell, Leslie etc, etc, etc.. Funnily enough it was always against Glenelg, which meant the Port 'points' were generally booted back in by Keith Kuhlmann. One the best exponents of the torp I've ever seen in the SANFL in my time watching it (1976 onwards..). Unfortunately for Keith they never used to get past the centreline much, except he used to kick the odd goal or two himself. ;) The opposition 'goals' were 4 of 5 melaleuca trees down the back and occasionally one of his flat torps would find their way between the big sticks. Quite theatrical. ;)

Kicked at the stobie pole / gum tree goal posts with a slight tilt in my neck. Hodges at his best. The little "flick" up with the left foot on follow through.

Jason Dunstall from time to time when the win was ultra important. Dermott Brereton when I was running in at 1/4 time ( Mum must have called me in ) right through the opposition pack.

Bucky Cunningham when I swooped on a loose ball that Dwayne Russell ( I ) had spilled.

Good times, good topic CK.
PAFC. Forever.

yes had to be very careful to make sure you kicked the end without the seam knob on! Years ago they were kicked out into the crowd on grand final day!
