Not sure Goldy, I guess my reasoning was they'd lost a few and their ins are a bit of an unknown quality, but that probably applies to a lot of recruits to the various clubs. The top 5 to 6 clubs are very even, and positions in the top 3 are very much up for grabs. I probably thought that they might lose a bit of hunger after winning the flag last year too.

Or maybe it was just a poor effort on my behalf

Despite it still being cricket season we appear to have scraped a reasonable side together for our first hit out. With the exception of 2 or 3 the rest of the A grade side named has previous A grade experience. And no, unfortunately the great man is still on the other side of the world.

Pretty hard to do yet I reckon. Plenty of ins for most clubs - Pongy, Mclaren, Goolwa, should be much better but whether they will bridge the gap to the top 6 remains to be seen. I think Compass might move into the 5, but not sure at who's expense.

Here is my guess:

Langhorne Creek
Victor Harbor
Strathalbyn
Willunga
Mt Compass
Yankalilla
Myponga
McLaren
Goolwa/PE
Encounter Bay

But I aint putting any money on it!

I think Mclaren are the dark horse to be pressing for 5th spot here. Wont be too far off the mark i wouldnt think. Some VERY handy ins. We've got em first up so I'll know more in a few weeks time... No idea who will drop out to fit them in tho...

Was actually a pretty good standard for a trial game. Morphy parks looked good in the first half and controlled most of the play but mclarens defence held up pretty well which meant mp went into half time only 2 or 3 goals up. Mclaren lifted there workrate in the 3rd and played some great footy if they had a forward who took a few marks Think the result may have been different. Morphys won by 10pts after steading in the last quarter. I Think mclaren will be very competitive going on that hitout.

Thanks fb, sounds like it was well worth it. Parks always are a descent side so defintely a plus for Mclarens. Look forward to see how they progress through the year.

Anyone know why?

Maybe you should be asking someone from Strathalbyn, pretty piss weak if you ask me!
Considering both leagues have talked it up with articles in the local papers only about 2 weeks ago, had medals made up, etc.
Supposedly they only found out yesterday when the SFL rang the club to get a team list!

If that is true, Strathalbyn is a disgrace to the GSFL. The Messenger Cup games I have been involved in have been awesome fun and it will be a real shame if this puts the future of the event in jeopardy. History says that 66% of Messenger cup winners have gone on to win another flag and 100% of losers have not. Read in to that what you will.

P32, given a bit more notice Willunga would have been more than happy to step in and give you blokes a touch-up ;)

What amateurs - what an insult to Reynella who now don't have team to play against and South who put the game on each year. Can't see this game happening any more

Sounds like Mclaren and Compass have shown some promising signs, did anyone else have a game this weekend?

I heard EB have taken all the drawstrings out of their shorts because it is just blatantly obvious they will get their pants pulled down each week.
