Yeah, he doesn't strike me as being the next "who wants to be a millionaire" champion.

really i thought for a bit it looked like the ball was getting away from here, like it was swinging away to his right.

Each to their own, I always look at who else is going for it and then keep still if I think they have it covered. Seen too many balls land in the middle of fielders because of players being distracted or avoiding collisions, I think the Steve Waugh/ Gillespie collision is embedded in many heads.

fair play and to be honest by that stage i had already gone through a fair few beers so maybe i wasnt seeing so clearly.

and totally agree if your not going to get to it, or your not the one that wil take thel catch stay the f**k still and dont make it anymore difficult than it needs to be

My first reaction was to hang Ponting, but I later came to realise there might have been another reason for his reaction. Could the injured finger have been aggravated during the incident ?

possibly, but i do think there was a half volley which Ponting dived for a tad before the catch he took. This seemed to also aggravate something as he seemed uncomfortable after the chance was missed.

Probably hit the nail on the head, might be thinking his world cup campaign could well be over.

That tends to confirm it. Aggravated the finger with the half volley but controlled himself --- then Smith aggravates it further --- especially after not listening !
If so, its starting to get into the area where I'd nearly throw the ball down in disgust myself

If Smith was in Pontings position, called for a catch and took it,
there would still be those blaming Smith .....

Watto used to cop the vent of the castigators a few years ago for anything 50/50 20/80 80/20 faultage
But after a couple of AB medals etc, he hardly longer cops it these days

SMITH V PONTING
Players invariably make mistakes, Smith appeared at fault for the minor collision
He made a mistake, as will a bowler or a batsman, it happens in cricket
Bradman made 0 in his last Test dig
I made 1 in my last 2nd class match
We both made errors
Mistakes happen
BUT
What Ponting did was disgraceful in front of a junior member of his team
He needs to make a forMAL apology to Smith, his team-mates and to the public who witnessed something that was of Primary Schoolish behaviour

Bullsh!t mal, Punter probably pointed out at drinks or at the fall of a wicket that their fielding was under par, what Smith done was stupid, dangerous and basic, Punters only human and shouldn't have to put up with idiots on the field.

I am quite happy to have a skipper out there who is so passionate that stuff ups p!ss him off. It raises the overall standard far quicker than a cuddle and saying "it's OK mate, I'm sure you'll do it better next time".

there is a time and a place, a quiet word in the changerooms would have done the trick, do you think the way Ponting reacted was going to help Smith confidence or make him field any better while they were out there.

He's a little too precious to represent his country at cricket if that adversely affected him.

Seriously, on the World Cup stage, passion is worth a crapload more than kisses and cuddles.

Absolutely the right place and time. Smith is a good fielder and enthusastic, however he doesn think sometimes and now he he knows where he stands and i doubt he will do it again.

Even though they had a small crowd, there is no doubt it would be extremely hard to hear. jeeze, i ran into someone only two games ago at a suburban ground because i didnt hear his call. These things happen. this is the first time i had been really annoyed at pontings actions. Iv always stood up for him, but this time, he is in the wrong

What a healthy debate reading the difference of opinions on the Ponting issue.

The facts are, well we dont know the facts and the reason for Ponting to show his dissapointment. I have a feeling it was more to do with the crap bowling than Smith almost stuffing the catch.

What was smith thinking though? he ran from mid on to mid off to try and take the catch surely he has some sense that a mid off may be in place

The selectors give Smith more than enough confidence, Christ, they can't even leave him out of the Australia A squad....

I was reminded about that 1999 match today. And yes, Ponting played in that game (top scorer in both Australian innings and the match). So yeah, I think that's something he is still reminded of when there is a skier.
