Lack of Recruiting 2011

Postby whufc » Wed Mar 16, 2011 9:11 am

Is it just me or has there been a serious lack of recruiting by clubs this pre season, there hasnt really been any big name ex AFL players apart from Eagleton and most recruits have come from country football around aus or amatuer football in SANFL. Normally there are one or two guns picked up from the VFL and a few 'name' players swapping between SANFL clubs.

If so what reasons could there be?

I put it down to the extra AFL teams Gold Coast and GWS. There are less players around at the moment.

Plus these days AFL clubs can rookie a few older players and they previously were in the SANFL and other leagues around the country.

I too feel the same, i always liked a few extra AFL players coming back.

Not sure mate, but besides Eagleton, McMahon and Fisher you're probably right, recruiting does seem quieter than usual.

Backwell get's overlooked by many who don't rate him, but he is proven at this level which should make him a pretty useful inclusion.

Perhaps clubs are investing more in their coaching groups, and working their underage more than before .. Some clubs have had strong reserves, 18's etc for a while and perhaps consider that talent worthy of trying to establish league careers now?

Tuck who was delisted from Hawthorn was on the radio yesterday stating that he wanted to play in the best competition outside of the AFL and would be moving on from Box Hill, it could be that he may well be on the radar of some of the SANFL recruiting managers, assuming that it is SA that he wants to come to.

It seems that a number of ex SANFL - AFL players seem to pick up coaching roles in the AFL as opposed to comming back to the SANFL as Platten and co have traditionally done.

In a general sense i think recruiting has been a bit quieter this year. Still some good recruits though.

In past seasons past South Adelaide and North Adelaide have boosted the numbers but they have both been a bit subdued.

I wonder if the lack of interstate recruiting is related to clubs balancing their lists in preparation for the recruiting restrictions being brought in next year. Or did that idea get canned?

Could be a target of the bloods considering his brother played with us and is seen at games whenever he's in Adelaide. Andy Collins also is from Hawthorn and played with his father as well. Could be a handy inclusion.

Most, if not all, clubs would have their lists finalised this close to the season, surely it would be too late from a salary cap perspective for him to come to the SANFL.

I'd say a cahsed up Victorian country club will snaffle him, even though he has said he wants to play at the highest level possible.

I'd say several clubs that missed out on recruits they were chasing would still have the abiity to fit him in. Werribee have expressed interest in him, but they'll have to close the deal quickly I think because VFL clubs must finalise their lists around about now I believe.

With Heath Lawry departing after most recruiting was over, maybe there's room there. However, Central have been pretty strong with their "recruiting policy", giving a significant weighting to the "character" of the recruit. It would depend, I assume on the likelihood of "four strikes". I also don't think they'd be prepared to offer too much, (without me knowing what his asking price is).

Depends entirely on whether the kid is after the most money he can get or try to get back into the AFL system.

Realistically, he would be within his rights to think a position on an AFL list next year is a chance, especially with another team coming in putting pressure on the talent pool again. His best interests would be to play finals footy at an SANFL club. Centrals, Eagles, Glenelg and Norwood would be the teams I'd be advising him to look at joining. And if he doesn't care about money then I've no doubt any would find a spot.

But again, depends entirely on what he wants to do.

Yep, Central are the only club that puts character before talent when it comes to recruiting and no other SANFL club takes a persons character into consideration  Didn't Central recruit a New Boy?

No I believe he was a central district player prior to his association with the new boys, unfortunately no winners for anyone, centrals have lost a possible future football star, SA public lost the opportunity of seeing a possible future star and the individual has possible made poor choices that have and will cost him in the future if he continues to associate with the new boys or any other group of the same ilk!

Darren Pfeifer will be a handy recuit/returning player for the Redlegs this year.
Previous poster is right in that Gold Coast and GWS have sucked up a lot of would be recruits to the SANFL.
Personally I am looking forward to seeing the next crop of youngsters at the Parade this year....... like I'm sure all other club supporters are too. Who will be this year's Georgiou and Jonas ?
Good for the competion that we have a year where most are developing kids with the odd "top up " recruit.
Look what happened at Norwood last year, due to the salary cap breach we had no choice but to play youngsters and found a couple of gems....maybe there is a lesson in that ?

Can not wait for the season proper !

I never mentioned other clubs. I'm sure all would take character into consideration. No real need for the rolling eyes, obviously a misinterpretation of what's been written.
