Ray Titus retirement

Postby CK » Fri Mar 11, 2011 8:44 am

The Advertiser reports today that photographer Ray Titus will be retiring from the role today.

For over 50 years, his work has been legend in the sporting field, with multi SANFL Media Awards and a range of photography awards too long to mention. Most of us have seen him over the years at SANFL and AFL games, with some of the most memorable shots of our sport taken by him.

A very sad day for sporting media, and many will miss his outstanding work. The Advertiser will run a tribute to him in the Saturday edition.

Very best wishes in your retirement, Ray, and thank you for many, many wonderful memories.
Can you guess where I'm calling from, the Las Vegas Hilton...

His fantastic photo's have helped to promote many sports. To my mind, they show the advantage of being there.

Loved his work over the years, a great photographer who was an inspiration to a lot of others and always approachable for a friendly chat. Has taken a lot of great SANFL shots over the years and continued taking SANFL shots even with the advent of local AFL teams. Have a great retirement Ray!

Went to school with Ray a Noel Pettingell drop punt from Prospect oval.
He's a perfect example of how to turn a hobby into a career.

A prominent childhood memory is of a very energetic Ray Titus scrambling into his specially-built photographer's chair at the top of the stairs on the eastern edge of the Cresswell Stand. Ray was almost literally out on a limb as he tried to get behind the bowler's arm to get the shot he wanted. It was probably useful in the footy season too. This would have been about 1962. Can anyone else remember how long that chair lasted? I think it probably stayed until the stand was demolished in 1989.

We used to live a few houses up from the Titus' and the amount of times my mother used to say "Ray Titus lives there".. yes mum, you told us.

I think one testament to his influence in the sports reporting landscape: can you name another print media photographer? I cant. Yet everyone who follows sport in SA knows the name of Ray Titus.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Was introduced to Ray only a week or so ago, didn't know then that he was about to retire.
Think they could have devoted a whole newspaper to his great photos from over the years.
Heard he is now looking forward to doing some of the things he has always wanted to do...and none of them have anything to do with photography!
Trust the process.
