A pewter mug or something similar, with an inscription on it - not sure if that would get under the $100 mark or not though. Something he can always use and would look good.

If you want something more practical and he is a handyman sort, a good quality tool like an electric drill or the like might be handy.

Pewter mug would be under a $100

as for a drill, you would struggle to find a decent drill for under a $100 that wouldnt break after a few uses!
