Australia's Greatest ODI Team

First Class Cricket Talk (International and State)

M Waugh
A Gilchrist
R Ponting
D Jones
A Border
M Bevan
S Waugh
S Warne
D Lillee
C McDermott
G McGrath

12th G Chappell
Apologies to D Fleming and B Lee

Chappell just misses out on a spot but all the batsmen above him are world cup winners.

Bevan has copped some flack in this thread but he played many crucial innings to get Australia to win games, not only that innings in Sydney but: 96 WC semi final Aus 4/12 he and Law put on a 100 + stand to give us a total to bowl at, super sixes game against S AF in 99, he put on the partnership with S Waugh when we were 4 for 80 chasing 271 to get us into the semi finals, 4/53 in that Semi final Bevan again puts on runs with Moody to get us to 213 and the shit house series we had in 2001-02 he guided us to our one win against S Afr in the last over when we were 7 for, needing plenty to win at the G. I'm sure if I could dig further I could find plenty of examples of how his batting style worked. Yes his strike rate was low compared to others but his average demosntrated he could bat in ODIs. His other great trait was that he could think it through, when wickets in hand were dire he could soak up the balls, keep the scorebaord ticking over a las the two World Cup semi finals. He called also farm the strike to the good batsmen so they had the strike a la the 99 super sixers amtch when he was batting with Waugh.

No I haven't been sucked in by his average which obviously will be inflated by * he goes down as one of our great one day batsmen for ability to read the game and adjust his batting style to suit the situation of the game.

I have the 87 World Cup ice man as 4th seamer and finisher along with McGrath. Lillee to open with Pidgeon McDermott 1st change but could easily have gone to Fleming with his subtle changes of pace.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Interesting to hear pontings comments after the last game, saying husey has stepped in to the bevan finishing role and doing as well as bevan probably ever did.... hussey > bevan because he is able to do all that bevan did plus he has the ability to smash big runs, something bevan rarely did. IMHO

Hussey is a much better player than Bevan ever was. Bevan was handy at most, and if he is considered to be the one day player of the generation, it just further proves to me how insignificant one day cricket really is.

*Bump*

The 30 greatest (most poular by vote) players have been named by CA...

1. Terry Alderman
2. Michael Bevan
3. David Boon
4. Allan Border
5. Greg Chappell
6. Ian Chappell
7. Simon Davis
8. Adam Gilchrist
9. Jason Gillespie
10. Gary Gilmour
11. Matthew Hayden
12. Michael Hussey
13. Dean Jones
14. Brett Lee
15. Darren Lehmann
16. Dennis Lillee
17. Damien Martyn
18. Greg Matthews
19. Craig McDermott
20. Glenn McGrath
21. Tom Moody
22. Simon O'Donnell
23. Ricky Ponting
24. Bruce Reid
25. Paul Reiffel
26. Andrew Symonds
27. Doug Walters
28. Shane Warne
29. Mark Waugh
30. Steve Waugh

Some interesting names from the 70s, Gary Gilmour, Ian Chappell and Doug Waters blokes who played hardly any one-day international cricket (but they were reasonably good at it). Simon Davis is in but not Ian Healy or Rod Marsh, I think Gilchrist might get the nod as the 'keeper unless they want Damien Martyn to fill in!!!!

So one of the 12 will be Gilchrist, 29 players fighting for 11 spots.....

* Newsflash *

As we speak Mal is storming CA's offices demanding Watson be in the 30....

Only joking Mal I think he should be in our best current one-day side as opener or #7 and bowling all or part of the 4th & 5th 10 over allocation as he did in the last tournament we won a trophy....

Reading that 30 again, I can't believe Davis is in ahead of Fleming!!! What did Davis ever do at a World Cup???

Dean Jones must be in.

As must Greg Chappel.
As must ponting
as must gily.

This leaves 2 batting spots.

Probably mwaugh aborder swaugh asymonds sodonnel will fill them.

Finally i agree with you  Lehmann would be one of, if not the most, respected talents going around in cricket circles in the last 20 years. Pity the selectors didn't see it the same as everyone else.

There was only one selector who didn't rate Lehmann highly enough, and he happened to be the Head Selector.
