An update from Alberton...

RESERVES:

Quarter Time

Port - 1.3 = 9

Sturt - 1.1 = 7

As expected, a bit of a scrappy start to the first official hitout for the start of the season. Port had plenty of possession but just broke down a little at half forward and there are a lot of youngsters out there getting their chance to impress.

For Port, Ben Yeomans has had a bit of a scrappy start, basketball convert Mark Paget looked promising in the ruck with his towering frame while former Central player Alex Stengle was great running off half back.

Bendigo recruit Darcy Gordon looked really solid at CHB for the Magpies while former Magpie and Sturt player Craig Taylor looked good across half back in his return to SANFL after winning a Div 2 Premiership with Eastern Park in the SAAFL last year.

Sturt have a lot of youngsters they are trialling from their underage system, in fact, from what I could tell, not 1 player in the Double Blues ressies side has league experience, while Port have about half a dozen.

Power listed ruckman Mitch Curnow looks promising for Sturt while number 50 (Beilby - didn't print christian names in the team sheet) is only small in frame but impressed getting in and under the packs.

I'd expect the skills to lift as the game progresses and there will continue to be plenty of players rotated to give them a chance, Port looking like they have close to a dozen players on their bench.

Another update from Alberton...

RESERVES:

3/4 Time Scores

Port - 9.7 = 61

Sturt - 3.2 = 20

Magpies by 41 points

GOAL KICKERS:

Port - Heath 3, Clinch, Watt, Grove, Biacsi, J.Slattery, Colbung 1

Sturt - Roberts 2, Beilby 1

The quality of football lifted in the 3rd term with both sides showing better skills and team work. Port got off to a great start through Ned Heath who kicked 3 goals playing from full forward.

Heath, who made his league debut last season and more known as a defender, was a strong focal point in the Magpies attack with his second efforts and defensive pressure a highlight.

For Sturt, they managed to found young Roberts in attack (number 54) who took a couple of strong marks and kicked 2 goals for the term, while bean pole Crocker (#41) had a couple of good moments across half forward.

However, the highlight of the day so far without doubt had to go the miraculous goal that young Michael Clinch kicked from deep in the pocket in front of the Bob Quinn stand.

Dodging and weaving around two or three opponents and tucked right up against the boundary line, Clinch kicked the superb six pointer half way through the 3rd term.

Sturt certainly improved with their intensity and skill level in the 3rd term but may find the 7 goal defecit too much to peg back in the final term.

Another update from Alberton...

RESERVES:

FINAL SCORES

Port - 14.12 = 96

Sturt - 4.2 = 26

Magpies by 70 points

GOAL KICKERS:

Port - Heath 3, Durdin 2, Dreimann, Kulikowski, Clinch, Watt, Grove, Biacsi, J.Slattery, Colbung, Lindsay 1

Sturt - Roberts 3, Beilby 1

As mentioned earlier, the Magpies just too strong for the young Sturt side, although a lot of the talented underage players from last season will be better for the run in the next grade up.

Port dominated from start to finish and in the end ran out very comfortable 70 point victors with Ned Heath leading the way with 3 majors for the Magpies. Heath left the game at 3/4, assumably to have a run with the league side.

In the absence of Heath, young Jed Durdin stepped up, presenting well at half forward to mark strongly and finish with a couple of goals while the Clinch miracle snap shot was certainly goal of the game.

For Port, Alex Stengle impressed across four quarters, young Ky Miller across half back showed great poise and Peter Lindsay was probably the best and no doubt quickest player on the ground.

As was the case last season, Port have lots of talented youngsters looking like they will be capable of playing some good league football and with the reserves being reigning premiers, there may be some depth at Alberton this year.

Craig Taylor and Darcy Gordon also impressed for the home side in defence while for Sturt, their best player was probably their leading goal kicker in young Roberts (#54) who kicked 3 of his sides 4 goals.

Christian Calabrese had some good moments as mentioned earlier while Giles (#64) and Thompson (#57 - not Adam Thomson) also showed some good sings for the losing side.

Now onto the league game where there will be plenty of new faces for both sides on show, looking forward to it...

Rams, there is a #55 LAUBE listed in the reserves team sheet but to be honest mate, I can't remember whether or not I saw him out there.

The 2 league sides have just ran out onto the ground and he is not amongst the group so I assume he played in the ressies mate.

Another update from Alberton...

LEAGUE:

1/4 TIME

Sturt - 1.4 = 10

Port - 1.2 = 6

Sturt by 2 points

GOAL KICKERS:

Sturt - Duldig 1

Port - Harder 1

The opening quarter saw a bit of a scrappy affair from both sides with Sturt seeming to have slight control of the game early, before Port had majority of possession late in the term.

Chad Norsworthy, at his 3rd league club, found plenty of the ball early for the Double Blues but let himself down with poor disposal while new recruits Joe Anderson and Cam Stokes had their moments as well.

Josh Thurgood and Jordan Erskine looked potent in attack at times when the delivery from the midfield was good while Adam Eckermann and Steve Summerton won a bit of the ball in the middle.

Matthew Duldig kicked the only goal for Sturt in his new colours but did struggle a couple of times with his second and third efforts. Luke Harder kicked the Magpies only goal in that quarter.

Another update from Alberton...

LEAGUE:

1/2 TIME

Sturt - 4.4 = 28

Port - 3.6 = 24

Sturt by 4 points

GOAL KICKERS:

Sturt - Duldig 3, Norsworthy 1

Port - Harder 2, Gray 1

The Double Blues got off to a great start with a couple of goals in the opening few minutes and looked dangerous going into attack when they got it in long to Matthew Duldig.

The former Glenelg full forward proved too strong for his seasoned opponent in Mathew Lokan, showing superior body strength in the one on one contests, kicking 2 more majors in the 2nd term for 3 in the opening half.

Port seemed to break down across half forward and whilst they had no problem winning their share of the ball, either poor decision making or strong defensive pressure from Sturt resulting in turn overs.

When the Magpies did go inside 50, they went deep into the pockets causing them to have difficult shots on goal, reflective in the 3.6 scoreline at half time.

It took Port until the 17 minute mark to kick their 1st goal of the second term, with Luke Harder showing some class to kick a couple of goals and keep Port in the game.

A sour note from the 2nd term with 2010 Reserves MAgarey Medalist Terry Milera reported for what looked liked striking his Sturt opponent. It didn't look too bad but the umpire saw enough to put him in the book.

For Sturt, former Carlton defender Jo Anderson got better as the quarter went on, Chad Norsworthy found plenty of the ball again, Craig Evans looks to have found some of his good form early and another Evans, young Frazer, is impressing at half forward.

Port had some good moments in the 2nd term with Power listed and former Eagles aligned player Mitch Banner finding a bit of the ball in his new colours, Matthew Gates looks impressive out of a back pocket and Harder looks to be their most dangerous forward.

All set up for a good second half of footy, this one could go either way I'd suggest.

Another update from Alberton...

LEAGUE:

3/4 TIME

Port - 5.10 = 40

Sturt - 5.6 = 36

Port by 4 points

GOAL KICKERS:

Port - Harder, Gray 2, Banner 1

Sturt - Duldig 3, Norsworthy, Plant 1

The Magpies head into the final change with a slender lead after Sam Gray kicked his 2nd goal minutes before the siren and despite having forward entry troubles, Port took the lead for the first time today.

Both sides struggles with their skill level early in that 3rd term, at one stage there was a chain of 4 handballs, all errors, that went back and forth from a Port player to a Sturt player, giving the crowd something to laugh at.

The highlight of that term was a deft little touch or flick on from former Hawk Cam Stokes who put the ball into the path of Sturt team mate James Plant who ran into goal and kicked truly.

In the end, it was the crumbing small men of Port who were able to apply scoreboard pressure after their ball movement both coming out of defence and going into attack needs some polish.

After a good start through the midfield, Chad Norsworthy was sent into defence for the Double Blues to do a job on the dangerous rookie listed Crow small forward Tim Milera.

Jarrod Young won a bit of ball that term for Port while Matthew Gates continued to impress coming off a half back flank. As mentioned earlier Sam Gray and Mitch Banner were working well at the fall of the ball.

Game is set up for a close finsih, who will register the first win of season 2011 - albeit a trial? I'll tell you in about half hour...

Another update from Alberton...

LEAGUE:

FINAL SCORES

Port - 13.14 = 92

Sturt - 6.7 = 43

Port by 49 points

GOAL KICKERS:

Port - Harder 3, Gray, Banner, Mercer 2, Erskine, Summerton, Tim Milera, Young 1

Sturt - Duldig 3, Norsworthy, Plant, Hurley 1

In the end, Port finished off the stronger of the 2 sides with an 8 goal last quarter seeing them run out comfortable 49 point victors.

Brad Mercer was shifted into attack after spending the majority of the game in defence to give a powerful forward presence, marking strongly and kicking a couple of goals.

Mitch Banner looked very good for the Magpies after crossing over from the Eagles, finishing with a couple of goals and plenty of the ball while yoiungsters like Matthew Gates, Sam Gray, Michael Clinch and Terry Milera had their moments.

For Sturt, Jo Anderson looks a likley type playing across half back, Cam Stokes did a couple of nice things as did John Hinge across half back while Chad Norsworthy looked good at his 3rd league club.

After the retirement of champion full forward Brant Chambers, the Double Blues will now look for a key focal point in attack and early on that looked to be former Bays player Matt Duldig.

Duldig used is larger frame to out position his opponent and kicked truly to finish with 3 majors for the game but took no further part in the game after 3/4 time.

Magarey Medalist Luke Crane was good for the visitors as well and Adam Thomson had his moments through the midfield as well. Young Fraser Evans also looked promising playing as a lead up half forward.

The Magpies weren't reliant on 1 focal point in attack, sharing the goals around with Luke Harder finishhing with 3 majors to lead the way.

No doubt both sides will be pleased to see their players in their first competitive hit out and will be satisfied in the fact that there are still quality players to come back into the line-ups before the season starts.
