U2 haven't recorded a decent song since "Pride In The Name Of Love"...

I'd take U2 anyday. BTW what's wrong with humanitarianism? And since when did sales ever reflect who is a better band (not that U2 have done too badly in that department)?

I admit I haven't really got into U2 since Beautiful Day, but they've rolled out so many classic songs for decades.

Can't stand ABBA. The only time I've almost got into a car accident I was fighting over the radio station with my girlfriend trying to turn off Waterloo before looking up to see a stationary car about 5-10m in front of me while I was doing 60. An involuntary reaction saw me swerve into the left lane, thank god there was no car there. Couldn't think of many things worse than dying listening to ABBA.

Mumma Mia! You nearly met your Waterloo saying Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie the radio which could have ended up with you sending out an SOS, that would have stuffed your Arrival.

Im not talking myself up mate,I am not saying I "know" music.I just beleive that U2 cover a wide enough range of music to suit most tastes. Not in a sense of "loving" the music, but appreciating.I "appreciate" alot of music I dont necessarily like.

If you truly appreciate music,I cant see how you could not give U2 some credit, you dont have to think they are the ants pants, but you can acknowledge they have musical nouse and the ability to perform at a high level.

This thread compares ABBA to U2,on my above statements, you still think U2 are the lesser of the two?

To clarify my earlier statement, I like U2 and have ridden the ups and downs with them. Part of being a long-term U2 fan is recognising there has indeed been many downs. There are things about U2 that make me absolutely cringe, not the least of which being El Nobo, but also the whole Rattle & Hum hideousness, the awful 'Pop' period, and their recent tendency towards serviceable but bland stadium rawk (so inoffensive it's offensive). But for every misfire there is a moment of utter genius which makes them hard for me to totally dismiss. I like U2 at their most adventurous - Achtung Baby and Unforgettable Fire (and pretty much everything where Eno has been involved) really do it for me.

But there is no denying there is a huge knucklehead component of their audience that only knows 'Beautiful Day' and 'Angel of Harlem', buys things like U218 and think themselves fans, have no necks, wave glowing mobile phones in the air at their concerts to solve world poverty, are called Dave, sing out of tune at the top of their beer-soaked lungs, drive Commodores and think 'The Wedge' is high art. You know it's true.

When my brother was christened, for some reason my grandparents gave me a little ABBA bag. It was red with little metal latches and had the ABBA logo on it. I miss that little ABBA bag. Much, much more than ABBA themselves.

Anything in which Brian Eno has been involved has been pure Gold.

Case in point: David Bowie's "Heroes" album.
