AUSTRALIAN captain Ricky Ponting smashed a TV set in the dressing after being run out, media reports say.

The incident happened during the World Cup opener against Zimbabwe.

The reports were dismissed by the Australian team management but they immediately sparked a stream of "ugly Aussies outrage" from Indian cricket fans on websites.

Australian media manager Lachy Patterson denied that Ponting had smashed an LCD television set in a fit of rage.

"Ricky threw his box into his bag and it flew up into a TV set," Patterson said.

"It wasn't smashed. There was a small blackout on one corner of the screen. It was still working when (it was) replaced."

He scoffed at reports that people had been injured by flying glass.

Quoting sources in the Gujarat Cricket Association, the Indian media reports had said that Ponting smashed the TV with his bat in anger after seeing a replay of his dismissal.

Let's not let the truth get in the way of a story, eh? Guess we can all trust the media to report something in a truthful, unbiased and non inflamed manner.

Either you've never played cricket, or you've seen many batsmen get out frustrated (with themselves, the decision the opposition etc etc etc) and throw their box hard into their bag. Not hard to imagine it bouncing out (or just remember it happening time and time again if you've ever played) and hitting something. And if you've worked with LCD TV screens you'd know some of them can be very delicate. So it's not hard at all to believe the official story.

But then again, I guess you've got a very reliable source like you were there, spoke to Michael Clarke or something like that to have reason to doubt it. Like everyone else you've got 2 versions that are second hand (at best). Just a question of whether you think it's more likely Ponting put his bat through a TV or the Indian media saw more of a story making a mountain out of a mole hill.

As i said earlier the media has beaten it up and i have no problem with pontings actions, accidents do happen and the damage probably was minimal. But is it too hard for management to come out and say that it was an accident and only minor damage occured? We just look silly when CA deny anything happened and 5 minutes later ponting owns up to it.
Maybe the indian media should be more worried about the pathetic crowds and how poorly run the tournament is. Deflected the blame from them cocking up the saffers anthem

Steve Waugh once threw his bat into a locker when he got run out. It happens, batsmen do things like that when there out. The only problem is the bullshit Indian fans like normal. Ugly Aussies, thats what they love. They need to hate something because there team is actually playing well.

As for your post, year I agree with you, if you throw your box around and something minor happen be honest then laugh it off.
