ABBA were not a "Band",only two of them played instruments, best decribed as hacks in my book.

U2,a strong willed singer, self taught (until early 90's) Bass player, competent drummer and cutting EDGE guitarist.

U2,by a street (with no name).

Umm .. Weren't Abba around well before Bono and co??

FWIW personally I'd prefer to listen to U2 (out of the two), but I'd imagine ABBA would be pretty close to them in the popularity stakes.

During their time I would say ABBA rivalled the Beatles in popularity, I'm old enough to remember both. In terms of popularity U2 don't even come close to ABBA. With the Beatles and ABBA even OLD PEOPLE knew who ALL the members were, I doubt that is true for U2, for instance I know who Bono is because he's a sanctimonious git, but the others....no idea. Who is better is a different question a matter of taste basically. If it is who was/is more popular it has to be ABBA.

Good points there Mick, I can just remember when ABBA toured Australia and there has been nothing close to it ever again in Australia.
Perhaps no 2 on the list would be when Springsteen was selling out 55,000 arena's nights on end on the Eastern seabord, even that hysteria got here, SAFM organised busses to Vic.
There's been no real big events ever since Springsteen and even then he didn't get close to whipping up the amazing craziness as ABBA.

U2 have sold upwards of 170 million albums.
ABBA have sold upward of 370 million albums.

ABBA changed pop music and their music was ahead of its time.
U2 haven't changed anything but have been good at their craft and definately not ahead of their time.

People will no of ABBAs work in 100 years time, noone would have heard of U2 in 100 years time.

It doesn't matter if you like them or hate them there's absolutely no comparison.

Comparing U2 to ABBA would be like comparing Sting to Elvis.

Elvis has actually outsold Robbie Williams since Robbie started selling albums and is actually pulling away.*
R Williams will be another bloke who's forgotten in 100 years, they'll remember his boots though.

Didnt realise to be good you had to crack the US market, that fact just makes his sales elsewhere even more impressive...

It helps if you want to be compared to Elvis.
Mind you I couldn't care less. I am the last person in the world who equates quality with record sales.

No mate, "On and on and on" was definitely ABBA.

I was at a party and this fella said to me
Something bad is happening, Im sure you do agree
People care for nothing, no respect for human rights
Evil times are coming, we are in for darker nights
I said, who are you to talk about impending doom?
He got kinda wary as he looked around the room
He said, Im a minister, a big shot in the state
I said, I just cant believe it, boy I think its great
Brother can you tell me what is right and what is wrong?
He said, keep on rocking baby, til the night is gone

On and on and on
Keep on rocking baby
til the night is gone
On and on and on
til the night is gone
On and on and on
Keep on rocking baby
til the night is gone
On and on and on
til the night is gone

Over in the corner I could see this other guy
He was kinda flirty, he was giving me the eye
So I took advantage of the fact that Im a star
Shook my hair and took a casual stroll up to the bar
And as sure as hell this guy was coming up to me
He said, who am I and who are you and who are we?
Whats our situation, do we have some time for us?
I said I was not exactly waiting for the bus
He said, if youre going somewhere can I come along?
I said, keep on rocking baby, til the night is gone

On and on and on
Keep on rocking baby
til the night is gone
On and on and on
til the night is gone
On and on and on
Keep on rocking baby
til the night is gone
On and on and on
til the night is gone

Both ABBA and U2 are music for people who don't like music. The type who buy one or two greatest hits CDs per year ("for the car") at Christmas time from KMart.
"A no vote from any club means there is some sort of risk involved in our entry into the competition not working," Steven Trigg.
