SPOC would be one of the wealthiest football club in SAAFL

They have nearly 7 figures in the bank!

SPOC people sold the Royal Hotel at Hackney 10 years ago and gave the proceeds to SPOCFC

They could go and buy a team to play finals every year in Div 1 if that’s what it was all about.

What's it all about for them then?

a lot of their past players/community went nuts a couple of years ago when they started paying a few blokes.
they believe rightly or wrongly that the "old school tie" should be enough insentive for blokes to come and play for the old scholars. they have the same ideals about the amount of non old scholars playing for the club.
at a rough guess there would be 4-5 in the A-grade for SPOC

You'd reckon an old scholar would be able to spell incentive! ;)

I suppose they are lucky that like PAOC and Sacred Heart they have a strong college side and the boys are a close knit group.
Otherwise they wouldnt be able to be so picky as to having or not having old scholars.
What would happen if the school had 4-5 lean years in the college comp, would that effect them in 10 years in the old collegians side?

Scotch have never really had that strong a college team, well they didnt the whole time I was at college.

The teams to beat while at St Micks senior college were ROCS, St Peters, PAC and Sacred Heart. Pembroke were ok but not upto the big 4 teams. We were up there for probs 3-4 years.

what are lean years in there standards though teaoby??

pretty sure they lost more then they won last year and have been pumped by close enough too 10goals for the past 3 years against PAC.

its saints though they will sort themselves out sooner rather then later.

Yet of recent years (5-10) kids drafted from SHC has been of high number & quality and that SHC had had the upper hand recently against there brother school from victoria in Assumption College Kilmore; if there is another forum on school/college football, i'd like to talk about this more as it's fascinating looking back over the years when football was football to what it's grown to today.

Still following it a little since I left SMC in 04 - The top sides over that period from my POV have Been PAC, SHC and SMC. With Rocs not far off the pace, followed by Immanuel and St Peters.

I think Pac are starting to, and will continue to reap rewards of quality players coming into senior footy for the next 3-4 years.

Sadly, a lot of SMC players seem to be headed to Flinders Park

still think you can include both ROCS and St Peters in the top few.
From what I heard PAC invested alot more time in finding the right borders and offering them the right things to get them there. That is part of the reason they have grown stronger in the past few years.
People reckon St Micks will drop off in the coming years as the school has allowed girls from year 8 now, not the traditional 11 as previous years. I dunno what will happen, they made the final this season.

Definately think there should be a college football thread, I would take a big interest in it!!!

Speculating and navel gazing

Postby stealthbomber » Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:53 pm

So folks...It seems this competition will be a cracker...but for mine ROCS are over rated, SPOC just average and PAOC and Iggies not likely to make an impact, Uni too clever for their own good, Walkerville soft and well that leaves the District sides to smash it out for a top 3 spot....Athelstone - proven failures in the past so tip them for 4th, Mobbury an unknown, Pt Disttricts young and ruderless so maybe it is the PNU yo yos to go down and up again?

PAOC will definately make a big impact!
Iggies will be around the mark but wont be a real threat. Have spoken to a bloke who has alot to do with the raggies, he reckons they will struggle hard this season, he even mentioned relegation.
Think Modbury will go alright this season. Districts have lost a few, gained some good players so they will definately be around the mark!

I reckon divvy 2 will be very close this year, although you'd have to assume the collegian sides will do very well, and the district sides may struggle, but interesting assessment from Stealthbomber... Paoc should be up there from what I've heard. Who knows tho, have to wait till trial games and the first few rounds! My Dark horse would be walkerville!
