The no import XI

Postby smithy » Wed Feb 16, 2011 7:01 pm

Mickey Arthur made a point in the recent Ryobi Cup that when you are performing poorly and you keep selecting the same players, you get the same results, so you bring in some talented youngsters and give them a go.
With much discussion about the state of grade cricket in this state, I was wondering what XI's people around the grade traps would select with only South Australians.
How strong a side would it be?
How young would it look etc.

GWW - here is a squad of those that have been tried and discarded or should have been

Chad Sayers - takes wickets every year and been a contender for the Bradman Medal for several years 8/30 on the weekend to push towards a 50 + wicket season
Cameron Francis - Top End lad moved down to pursue cricket and SA U/19 rep, Poor Grade Stats this season thus far
Jake Lehmann - Son of a Gun, but unlike his father is still serving an apprenticeship in Grade ranks, Futures League squad IIRC

Jason Borgas - Had a good half a season a couple of seasons ago, dropped after the 1st game next season and never seen again. Excellent form in Grade cricket
Jake Brown - disappeared off the radar
Andy Delmont - did hear he has moved to Melbourne, did get a shot a few years ago
Dan Cullen - quick rise to the top of international cricket and sunk quicker than the Titanic.
Ken Skewes - contracted for several years but now in the wilderness, currently firing in Grade cricket the past few rounds
Dylan Thomson - Age could be a factor here but has won a Hookes Medal for BOG in the GF

James Smith - contracted and currently in the side but for how long is anyone's guess
Tom Moffat - contracted and has played 1 game this season good form in Grade cricket
Michael Cramner - contracted, Australian U/19 rep and a good year in Grade Cricket last season, mediocre form this season.
Kane Richardson - contracted, has featured in a couple of games - IMO one to watch in future if keeps up Big Bash Final performances
Cullen Bailey - contracted, moved Grade Clubs to get more overs but appears to be disappearing like his spin twin Dan. Curtain could be closing.
Gary Putland - been on the list for several years for a handful of games, might be an honest trier to be a fill in player when required

Feel free to add more gentlemen...

Would that side do any worse than the current batch of ageing imports with ok/ordinary shield records ?
I really hope this state moves to promote young local talent from now on, hence the reason for this topic.

We tried the kids, and we did things like get knocked over for 27. We tried the big name imports, still didn't work. We tried the guys on the cusp of first class for other states, and got some success but mostly because Klinger turned out to be a good one for us. We've tried changing captains, coaches, selectors and brought in and changed high performance managers. No doubt we've also changed specialist coaches. We even tried to stick to the same group for a few years and that didn't change anything. The one thing we haven't done is change the structure of cricket in the state.

Would that team do worse than one that included Klinger, O'Brien, Christian and Blizzard? Yes seeing that the first three names there are the first three you would pick when choosing the team.

Pretty easy to blame the imports for us being as bad as we are, but they aren't the problem.

First 3 I would pick in the SS format? Hell no, o'brien with Lyons rise, and a full blooded spinner, O'Brien should only be playing on major turning decks. he should not be batting number 5 that's for sure or being picked as a batsman

O'Brien or Lyon, either way it's another import.

Didn't say Lyon wasn't an import. I was stating Obrien would certainly not be one of the first 3 picked that's for sure
