Trans Adelaide Train Accident

Postby Sojourner » Thu Feb 03, 2011 9:54 pm

Just wondering if anyone has any information on the accident that occurred in the 1980s when two trains collided on the Noarlunga Train Line, I couldn't find a picture of the Red Hen that was involved, but seemed to recall that the Super Train actually ended up worse off out of it!

Ahh good memories. i grew up on the street where Broadmeadows train station is. Trains were a big part of my childhood
Used to jump on the ol Red Hens and go for a cruise sitting next to the open door, lookin back... how bloody dangerous lol

Can remember me and my 2 brothers loading up our water pistols, hiding in drain alongside track and jumpin up and spraying into the open doors!
One driver hit the brakes and the conductor jumped out the door and went and told my mum, while the train waited

Very good memories :)

If you are able to call into the Port Dock Railway Museum they have working Red Hen Trains running a short trip up and down around the complex along with a smaller steam engine - for $20 they give you a driving lesson in it! - They also run down at Victor Harbour during fire season when they cant run the steam trains.

In 1982, powercar No #2008 suffered a head on collision with a truck at a railway crossing and sustained severe front end damage. The railcar was eventually repaired and returned to service.

Sounds like my childhood at Munno Para.
Lived adjacent to the line there.
Most stories don't relfect well on a silly young man.
However, this one's okay for public consumption:
Goods train slowed down through MP station one day, so I hopped on the back and caught it to Lizbef for Macca's.
Got as far as Smithy and decided to hop off.

My earliest memories are of living in Munno Para against the train track. Our cat Rapunzel was killed when it leapt of the back fence onto the tracks and into a moving train.

Lol, like I said, that is one my earliest memories. That, and making army bases out of pine needles for my little green plastic army men to hide in.

Can't remember the street name, I'll ask my folks. It was defence force housing though.

I'm guessing you were up the southern end of Alawoona Road Quichey.
Very close to the train tracks there. Had a mate lived in one of those defence houses.

That brings back memoires... I would occasionally catch the train to school, heading to Ascot Park (SHC junior - old catholic schoolboy here) from the southerly direction. The train I caught was habitually a string of 6 red hen carriages, including a baggage car. I used to ride in the baggage car with the rest of the teenage garbage. I have vivid memories of the Mitchell Park HS kids grabbing the fire extinguisher and letting it rip out of the baggage car door, soaking the Westminster college kids crossing the overpass at Marion station as the train went under it
