The Sunday Mail

Postby Sojourner » Sun Feb 18, 2007 10:00 pm

I phoned up and cancelled my subscription to the Sunday Mail last week, I realised that I was reading bugger all of it and really only using it for the tv guide which I can get out of the Messenger or online.

Naturally I get the Advertiser every day and like reading any of the football articles that are not penned by Michaelangelo Rucci, those I skip over no matter what it is about because I have always disliked his attitude that comes through his articles, if I hear him on 5AA I switch over to MMM for the same reason.

Anyway I decided that I still wanted to get a Sunday paper, yet not one that was owned by News Ltd. I checked online and found that the Sunday Age - Melbourne is Fairfax, their delivery of papers arrives in Adelaide at 7:30am so you cant get delivery, yet what you do is have your name down at the local newsagency and they save you one behind the counter for when you can get there to collect it.

Although todays is the first one that I have read I am quite impressed by it, it has a massive sports section and a number of really interesting articles. I have to admit that it will be interesting to read about the Crows and Power from another point of view.

So all in all, I think that the Sunday Age is well worth checking out and even though it is from Melbourne, a worthy competitor to the Sunday Mail.

I always buy a Melbourne paper around AFL GF week, Melb Cup and Grand Pricks.
But normally prefer Sunday Mail as news is local and I like to check out local sport section. Never read TV week as always 40% time incorrect!!!

The Sunday Mail is a waste of pulp. I noted in this week's edition that 6 of the first seven pages were taken up with an AFL player who'd been caught having a quiet wager on the side, chauvinistic anti-Victorian posturing in the guise of an impending soccer fixture, and an actor of modest renown getting sucked off at some distance above the clouds. That any of these is considered newsworthy is questionable; That they occupy the first few paegs of the publication, adorned with headlines of obscenely proportioned fonts, speaks volumes about the calibre of the rag. Turning further into the paper one discovers why such dreck is published at the front of the tome: By the time one encounters Peter Goers, Amanda Blair (or, God forbid you should press past the middle, Nicole Cornes) one has already been lulled into a state of intellectual passivity, and is receptive to the mindless, banal, middle-class dribble printed herein.

Despite this I continue to buy it. The telly guide itself is worth the purchase price, and during the footy season one does get short writeups of the previous days' SANFL matches. Tearing through the dozen or so pages of AFL irrelevance to find the SANFL news is not unlike an Easter Egg hunt. Still, better SANFL news is obtained in greater volume and quality on this most august website, among others. Imagine how many trees could be saved if it was possible to buy just the telly guide.

Ephedrine, you can get the TV guide on-line! Just go to each station's website, or try googling & save the planet!

Like the TV week, but with the price of the Sunday Mail. Or less.

During the footy season I find The Age's match reports are great. Not being a two team (or one team) town all clubs seemingly share equal billing (including the 6 non victorian sides). Saturday is their day for more "behind the scenes" stuff and player profiles and even those are very balanced in their spread of clubs covered. There was two big articles during last season on Ben Hart and Mark Riccutio for example.

BTW don't know if you had a crack at the Snodger Crossword on Sunday but the answer is Yes! It is always that hard!
