SOME call it blasphemy, others simply refuse to believe, but word emerging from the Berri Football Club camp is the touted “Fitness God” has been defeated.
Tuesday night’s three kilometre time trial proved to be Peter Safralidis’ stumbling block, under 15 star Kale Trussell tearing him a new one in the gruelling fitness test.
Undefeated in the time trial since his Goodwood Saints days in 2003, Safralidis has maintained a stranglehold on the event ever since.
Even a leaner and lighter David Hankin couldn’t match it with the Demon captain last season.
But Trussell soon emerged a contender, sticking with the pace-setter, before blowing him away in the latter stages.
“I’m not going to use my delayed honeymoon as an excuse, which I just got back from, but that’s probably the biggest reason for it,” Safralidis said.
“I tried to maintain my fitness while touring Europe, triple jumping across the Greek Islands, doing some sprints in the Louvre before doing some laps across the Thames, but I really must have done too much sightseeing when I should have been focussed on my training.
“I’ve got to admit, it is good to lose the expectation for once, now I can slack off and pretend I’m injured like Daniel Dawson used to.
“Heck, I might not even finish the next one, screw it.”
Trussell was unavailable for interview as he was still running.
