to deter negative around the wicket bowling - the you could be out lbw with the ball pitching outside leg every bowler would be pitching outside leg trying to hit the batsman on the pads as teh shots you are able to play to balls pitching outside leg are reduced so the field could be placed accordingly
the part of teh lbw law i dont agree with is if the ball hits you outside off stump but is still going to hit the stumps its not out - that is just good bowling so it should be rewarded
