Something along the lines of tarring a billion people with same brush. It's as absurd as suggesting you and I are genocidal maniacs because our leaders invaded countries and killed 100,000 civilians in the process.

Most Muslims I know here in Adelaide drink beer and eat lamb too ya know.

I don't think the context of the message is tarring all at all.
To me it is aimed at selected group who want their own beliefs seen and heard yet deny to accept others and in fact then claim to be discriminated against..

"We will accept your beliefs without question.
All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in peaceful harmony with us.
This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, AND OUR LIFESTYLE."

And you are right, there are many that embrace both cultures here..

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011 ... 130005.htm

Here is much the same thing attributed to Kevin Rudd, John Howard, etc, etc.

It's wonderful to see just how often some people rush to believe whatever they read that suits their prejudices.

It's not racist, but.........

just dumb and ignorant. :?

(Well said Mr. Fillon, except he didn't say it.)

Those who are deeply religious bother me, but my fear of deeply religious people extends beyond muslims. Unfortunately too many people use religion to justify crimes against humanity. In an ideal society we would all be atheists...my favourite "religion" ...did someone mention vegans? I really hate those finicky bastards

Wow I'm in total agreeance with mick (excluding the anti-vegans bit, which I'm not either btw).

Uni teacher hey? I knew you were a closet lefty, mick ;)

I have quite a lot of sympathy for many left policies, however I'm less impressed with their economic management. In a country like Australia with political freedom, the economy is major issue that affects ordinary people, unfortunately bad management hurts the less well off more than the wealthy.

I enjoyed your previous post, mick.

As for the economy, Australia has performed better than any other country through the GFC and inflation and unemployment are well under control.

I'm not sure where this leads to economic mismanaement, unless you accept that if something is repeated often enough it becomes fact in people's minds.

Insulation program = bad management.

Schools Building program = good result.

Overall stimulus package = brilliant result.

Im sure it does Quichey
But as can be seen in news around the world, it is often the Muslim people making the news.
Dont often here about Buddhist extremists, or Jews having a race war with whites at Cronulla do you?

I totally agree with him and wish our leaders had the balls to say the same in Australia.

But they do, Iron Fist

Here's a recent article to prove it :D

Whole world Needs Leaders Like This!

Australian Prime Minister had this to say recently;

"Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia..."

Quote:

IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians.

This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom.

We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language.. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society. Learn the language!

Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.

We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.

This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.

If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.

* * *

This screed often comes with the kicker - "Maybe if we circulate this amongst ourselves, WE will find the courage to start speaking and voicing the same truths."

Mostly this is attributed to Kevin Rudd but sometimes the source is cited as John Howard and lately even Julia Gillard has started to get the credit for it. And it's been going on so long that there's now no chance of dissuading the Tea Partiers of its veracity. They simply don't believe you when you tell them it's not true. It's on the net. It crops up in their email traffic all the time. It must be true.

irrespective of the author, do you think most Australians would agree with this statement or would the majority dismiss it as nonsense?

Given that folowers of Islam in Ausralia who would agitate for Sharia law ìn Australia would be about 0.001% of the population, I'd be more concerned about why you are so worried about it.

It's an irrelevant piece of nonsense designed to rally people who are easily led.

Like you.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my participation on this site and welcomed the opportunity for vigorous debate and idealogical repartee with other members. I believe people can hold beliefs which are drastically at odds with each other and still enjoy stimulating discussion and believe it or not, I am always open to learning something and having my views challenged. It is our differences that make things interesting.
What disappointed me was when the discussion intensified, the forum dengrated into trading personal insults. I am happy to discuss anything with you Red and Black, but I have not nor do I intend to attack you personally. If that is how this works- Im out.

That's obviously not what the French Prime Minister believes.

On an unrelated note, I've met far more many annoying French people than I have Muslims.

I agree with you about the personal insults, Darth. I've enjoyed stimulating debate on here with many who hold alternate views and we still debate happily.

I tend to reply in generally the same strength of tone as the poster I'm replying to.

In your case, you announced yourself with a number of extremely disparaging statements about the Greens and leftists.

If you go back and read your posts, I'm not sure they were in the spirit of ideological repartee or stimulating debate.

If you read those posts, you might think it a little hypocritical to lecture about propriety now.

Purely out of academic interest, I'd like to know how many anyone speaks, and how many there are.
And are they similar enough for the various groups to understand each other?
Are there any references anywhere - on line or in libraries?

[That's ignoring the debatable issue of which racial group were actually here "ab origine" - more than 40,000 years ago.]

I know growing up in alice springs, many locals (aboriginal and otherwise) spoke 2, 3 and sometimes 4 of the local aboriginal languages. At the time of colonisation there are noted to have been upwards of 230 different distinct languages spoken on the australian continent. Not sure of those still being used, but pretty sure it sits somewhere close to 100 languages. Its a great shame that so many australians are so ignorant of the amount of culture and difference that existed in australia prior 1788.

Did not see any mention of aboriginals in the quote...

I do apologise for posting a topic that's origin is questioned, however the content that is being debated is of wider belief than some suggest in my opinion...
