Secondhand Rip-Offs...

I just had to post this here as i'm still laughing about it several hours later...

I walked into this secondhand shop today and looked at this item for sale. It was a secondhand "Made In Mexico" Fender Stratocaster with the asking price of $1300 reduced from $1500...the brand new price for one of these is around $750 depending on finish and model.

On the other side of the locked display cabinet was another Fender Stratocaster, this time a bog standard "Made In America" Standard Stratocaster. According to the sticker it was some special model but it definitely was a Standard Stratocaster as it looked exactly the same as the Stratocaster I recently bought right down to the colour. The asking price was $3300!!! My Stratocaster I recently bought new cost me $1300...RRP for it is $1800...

Any of you seen rip-offs like these???

How much were they worth? What was their offer?

Quite a bit more than the $50 they offered, I'll put it that way.

Antique and collectable shops have to balance stock they buy with stock they sell
IF they but items and mark up 50% they will invariably get caught with too much stock and low liquidity
They rely on purchasing stock at a bare minimum price and marking them up to make mainly between 100-500% profits on items

These shops may only get a few sales on some days and rely on thier margins exclusively

These shops will get away with over inflated items, as some collectors are prepared to pay top dollar, particularly if the item is rare
OR as in my case, I cant be bothered searching for the item any further and pay thier prices

Having worked for them I still laugh at their pricing they normally can only go via the internet for pricing. I still to this day shake my head at some of their pricing. I learnt along time ago whilst work for and after leaving them to inform them of their pricing stuff ups never works.

It's a fair old mark up they have. Sold them a couple of PA speakers two years ago and they're still sitting in the store. I got $150 for them plus an amplifier and the price tag on the speakers is $295.

Firstly whats a stratocaster?

Secondly the last time i was in cash convertors (about ten years ago) i saw the exact same surf fishing rod i had recently bought from BigW for $70 on sale for $130. End of Cash Convertors for me.

A mate bought a Technics 1200 turntable for $70 there.

Told the shop assistants to let him know if they got any more in and he'd gladly take them off their hands.

Got another one for about $90.

Saving about two grand on decks...

I once went into a well known car dealer with a Range Rover because they had a specific part in stock.
I noticed in the show room a second hand original E-type Jag in reasonable condition.
Because I showed some interest they quickly offered me a test drive, which I accepted as it helped fill in time while I was waiting for the minor repair to my car to be finished..

I didn't buy it for two reasons;
1. They don't really handle very well - too long and narrow.
2. The price they were asking was astronomical, way above book value.

I didn't go there for service after that either, although they did fix the problem satisfactorily.

My missus went to an antiques shop in town a couple of months ago and they were selling old dip tins for $70.00 a pop. I almost fell over backwards when she told me. We used to use them to catch shrimp.

Just bumping this old thread...

After about 2 weeks of arguing via email, they finally admitted after consultating various musical sources, that I was indeed right in saying that it was a "Made in Mexico" Fender Standard Stratocaster and not a "Made in the U.S.A." American Deluxe Stratocaster (about $800 versus $2000 plus)...(NO SHIT! Read what's written on the headstock). They ended up making a much lower revised offer (no bargain but a fair price) which I took up...

I sunburst Strats with maple necks!
