Aussie Premier League

Postby Jim05 » Fri Feb 04, 2011 6:08 pm

Sorry guys i have to get my rant out of the way.
This new premier league is a farce. I have always supported the redbacks but i cant see myself supporting the adelaide heat or some other poxxy nickname. For starters to have franchises with 2 teams from sydney and melbourne and 1 from other cities is bad enough but then to give them a budget of $1 million and introduce free agency is a joke. Guys we have followed with pride during the big bash can suddendly find themselves playing for sydney or brisbane or the highest bidder. I dont want dan christian playing for melbourne or perth. These franchises are open to foreign investment so the indians will end up owning the lot, then they can turn it into a mini IPL. Once that happens i can bet you within 5 years the franchise owners will want more money so will get broadcasting rights to show games live in india at primetime so our teams will be playing during the day. The whole thing stinks and this saturday will be the last time to see a nsw/sa t20 rivalry, next year it will just be a mini IPL.

Foreign ownership can't exceed 49% (I think, it may be lower, definitely not higher) for any franchise.

Sounds like China.

I too agree. To see Ferg or Christian etc playing for the Sydney MardiGras instead of the Adelaide Potatoes wouldn't be a good thing...

The Australian First Class Cricket scene is built on the State vs State rivalry. I will state now I won't be attending any games for the Adelaide spuds or what ever stupid name they decide for them.

Cricket Australia messed with the List A format this season so I promptly ceased attending games with this new circus coming to town next season looks like the only First Class cricket I will be watching live is the Shield and internationals

QFT

I'll have even less interest in this than I do the current T20 comp.

Yep to quote Mr Horse, "No Sir I don't like it" but in saying that the players should get a healthy pay rise and CA will be swimming in it which hopefully will find it's way down to the grassroots level.

Adelaide Pissants
Brisbane Water Pistols
Melbourne Mudholians
Melbourne Storm (v.2)
Sydney Divas
Sydney MardiGras (thanks SJABC)
Hobart Howlers
Perth Prairies

These are my choices for the new "mini IPL" circus.

Give me the Bulls, Bushrangers, Redbacks, Blues, Warriors and Tigers anyway.

Players have moved between states for years, but the bottom line is they wear the uniform of their adopted state, represent their adopted state, and play to win for their new state.

Pfft take away the my state V your state Rivalary and what do they have?

This change is a load of crap

Finally the Redbacks get a comp they do well in, and the team gets taken away!

The nature of first class cricket is its state against state, and then its at international level. Even just calling the team Adelaide instead of South Australia gives it much more of a grade level comp, hardly what we should be promoting. A bit step backwards

i can not see why the whole basis of the comp has to change. who is making the money out of the new concept.it seems to me that we should be encoraging state based players to play for the state they are playing with in that year a player playing for SA in shield cricket & melbourne in 20/20 will only cause confusion & will probably detriate the 20/20 concept into a farce & due to the money being talked about may even lead to corruption & cheating.
i will see if i am right in 5 years

I agree with this. I'm a fan of T20 and have loved the Big Bash. Why couldn't they expand the Big Bash and make it home and away (10 matches for each side) with the existing finals format.
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

I'd much prefer the teams to remain as is with a slightly expanded T20 season (10 games each excellent) but I think the reasons tonight was the final time those players will play a T20 game for SA or NSW is because they want to bring in more teams by exapnding the comp to eight teams (two teams each in Sydney & Melbourne) and thus thought you couldn't have one of either those teams truly representing a state.

Also as we know big money Indian investors are keen to get involved and supposedly are right now willing to invest tens of millions of dollars into the Sydney & Melbourne based teams so with that you would think they would want to change the team nicknames too.

I'd rather be supporting an SA based team than an Adelaide based team but with the payrises all the players across the board will be getting and all the extra money that will be flowing into local cricket I think it will be a positive thing.

Good topic JIMBO, I think everyone is pretty much on the same page as you. I was a bit worried about "Brod" initially, but a later post saved his bacon. I think the only thing the new concept really means is more money for the players. I love the current format, just enough I think, 6 games then the finals is enough for me. Went to all the homies and fantastic atmosphere, including last night. Not sure I would be turning up to see a franchise play. But it might also be all about TV rights as well. Unfortunately it is not all about us cricket lovers.
