The White Stripes have broken up!

Postby The Real Number 3 » Thu Feb 03, 2011 1:25 pm

Sad news, music lovers. According to their website The White Stripes (Meg and Jack) have officially broken up.

They said "The White Stripes would like to announce that today, February 2nd, 2011, their band has officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live.

The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health. It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.

Meg and Jack want to thank every one of their fans and admirers for the incredible support they have given throughout the 13 plus years of the White Stripes’ intense and incredible career...

The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful."

Rumours about whether they were brother and sister, husband and wife, or boyfriend and girlfriend followed the band for a little while until it was revealed they were once upon a time were married, but it led to divorce. The band hadn't released an album in four years; Jack is also part of The Dead Weather and The Raconteurs (he also just produced Wanda Jackson's recently released album).

Terrible news this is. One of my all time favourite bands. And on the same day Richie Valens, Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper passed away back in 1959.

February 3rd sure knows how to kill music.

Well they had a pretty solid run, at least Jack has his other bands to continue with.
Don't care what anyone says, the stripped back sounds of just guitar and drums (and occasional piano) made for some great modern rock.
ABC2 had their Canadian tour film "Under Great White Northern Lights" recently which wasn't bad.

The first song of theirs I heard was "I'm Finding it Harder to be a Gentleman", which still sounds pretty good today.

I thought they were a breath of fresh air when they first came along and continued to produce quality albums. Only saw them live once (BDO 2006) and it wasn't a great show to be honest , but was probably an off night , and they were following Iggy & The Stooges who had just owned the day. 8)
Fell in Love with a girl is great track.

Yeah that BDO was my first ever. And only time I got to see them play. Fell in love with a girl is indeed a great track!

It sounds weird but i love the White Stripes kookiness if you know what i mean haha.

Listen to any one of these songs and you'll know what I mean.

I just dont know what to do with myself, black math, little ghost, apple of my eye, blue orchid, im lonely, jack the ripper, we are gonna be friends, walking with a ghost, as ugly as i seem, my doorbell, hardest button to button and of course Hotel Yorba.

The late John Peel rated them one of the most exciting bands he had ever heard in his life and was credited with helping break them in the UK, when he played their album continually after finding it.
Can you guess where I'm calling from, the Las Vegas Hilton...
