200 club

Postby nickname » Wed Feb 02, 2011 1:57 pm

Going through Westies' 2010 Annual Report I counted up the number of 200+ game players we've had and was surprised to see it was only 19, in the 120-year history of the club. This seems extremely low to me and I'm interested to see how it compares with other clubs, if others have those stats.

Norwood have 17, although James Gallagher has 199 with the power to add.

371 Garry McIntosh
307 Michael Aish
304 Keith Thomas
292 Phil Gallagher
289 Michael Taylor
283 Neil Button
267 Roger Woodcock
254 Craig Balme
246 Tom Warhurst
234 Brett James
232 Robert Oatey
214 Doug Olds
214 Bill Wedding
211 Jim Michalanney
204 Justin Scanlon
204 Jerry D'Antiochia
201 Ron Kneebone

* Danny Jenkins played 198 (plus 5 state), John Wynne 293 (plus 8 state).

Norwood's tally may seem low for a club that's been around since 1878, but for many years, anyone who played 100 games was a stalwart. Doug Olds was the first 200 gamer, and it came in 1957. Ron Kneebone was the next in 1967, Bill Wedding the year after that.

Well I'm glad we're not well behind the pack, but it's surprising to me that Centrals have more 200 gamers than Norwood. I don't know that it means anything, but it is curious.

Sorry Spelly.
Brett James 234 plus 5 state games = 239.
Keith Thomas 304 games plus 5 state games = 309.

These are the official Norwood Football Club records.

Also, please explain Jack Oatey, 203 games? I've heard this before but have never been able to reconcile. I have 162 games for Norwood, 19 for Norwood-North Adelaide, 7 for SA, totalling 188. A further 5 games for South Melbourne brings his tally to 193.

We have had only two players since 1991 to play 200 matches as you see above. However, only 22 players have played 200 or more matches with one club from that year:

(Night series matches not included, but no-one misses out here)
Tim Weatherald 253 (Sturt)
Brian Haraida 235 (Central)
Gavin Colville 232 (Eagles)
Justin Cicolella 230 (Eagles)
Mark Clayton 228 (Port)
Jade Sheedy 224 (Sturt)
Matthew Slade 223 (Central)
Rick MacGowan 223 (Central)
Chris Thredgold 221 (Sturt)
James Gowans 220 (Central)
Chris Gowans 211 (Central)
Trent Mills 211 (South)
Troy Clements 209 (Norwood)
Ben Nelson 209 (Sturt)
Adam Switala 209 (Central)
Corey AhChee 206 (Port)
Simon Feast 205 (Sturt)
Brant Chambers 204 (Sturt)
Nick Chigwidden 204 (Glenelg)
Brett James 203 (Norwood)
Matthew Powell 203 (Sturt)
Scott Bamford 201 (North)

Yeah, that would have been from the SANFL website in around 2000. I have put up all the 200 game club members so hopefully any mistakes can be rectified. So I can rule out Oatey then. :)

Do you have a year by year tally for James handy? To see where I am wrong. ;)

This is the year by year tallies I've compiled for Keith Thomas:
1985: 24 games, 39.25 (don't know how many night matches here)
1991: 22 games, 10.13 (5 games, 3 goals in NS)
1992: 22 games, 16.12 (5 games, 9 goals in NS)

The Football Times for 1993 gives him 305, one more than you stated.

For Brett James:
1990: 18 games 15 goals (from the Football Times publication)
1991: 14 games, 3.4 (5 games, 4 goals in NS)
1992: 22 games, 1.2 (4 games in NS)
1993: 24 games, 12.9 (4 games, 3 goals in NS)
1997: 8 games, 4.4
1998: 1 game, 0.1
2000: 9 games, 2.3
2001: 22 games, 1.6
2002: 23 games, 10.10
2003: 20 games, 2.2
2004: 20 games, 5.5
2005: 20 games, 4.6
2006: 20 games, 1.5

I think that the interesting thing about West is that they've had a few blokes start there, play a reasonable amount of games for them, then move to another club or club(s), and play a large amount of games in total.

3 I can think of are Neil Kerley, Clayton Lamb and Ken Eustice.

Dunno the story with Jack Oatey but...

Pretty sure Bob Quinn only played about 179 actual games for Port.

About 54 games were credited to him because of WWII service.

One assumes the credit covers the games he missed.

Most of 1940, all of 1941 and the Port-Torrens years...

Spelly two that you don't have for West, according to the Annual Report figures which I assume Mark Beswick put together, are Peter Winter (175 home and away, 27 Cup games = 202) and Jeff Bray (190 home and away, 14 Cup = 204).

They are both 200 club members of the SANFL, so surely they should be recognised as 200 game players for West Adelaide.

One year North published their two hundred game players and omitted Barrie Robran and Don Gilbourne. There was uproar at the AGM and they have gone back to recording the 200 game players in accordance with the league rules that included various officially sanctioned competitions. Barrie Robran, in prticular, retired once he had achieved his 200 games. To say 30 years later that he didn't play 200 games for the club is churlish in the extreme.

Spelly's list is just about spot on for North. You just have to add Scott Bamford with 201 games.

So North only have 17 200 gamers, but like the other clubs most of them have been since the 1960s. In fact Don Gilbourne in 1962 was the second only after Ken Farmer.
