AUS V UK/SAF ODI Game 6

Postby smithy » Tue Feb 01, 2011 5:00 pm

Australia fast bowler Shaun Tait is firming as a starter in Wednesday's sixth one-day match against England at the SCG having tested his fitness over the past few days.

Tait's South Australian counterpart Callum Ferguson could also be line for a recall after being added to the squad for the final two one-dayers as cover for Shaun Marsh.

While Marsh has remained with the team and underwent the scans on Tuesday morning, the selectors have deemed it prudent to call up Ferguson, who had been preparing to play for South Australia in the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash final, in the left-hander's place.

"Callum has an excellent record in one-day internationals for Australia and is in good form this season," said chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch.

"We are sure Callum will seize the opportunity that comes following the unfortunate hamstring injury suffered by Shaun Marsh."

Paceman Tait has been bowling three-over spells in the nets as he recovers from a strained buttock muscle which he sustained during the second game in Hobart. That's a fitness test ?

Fellow quick Brett Lee may be in line for a rest having bowled exceptionally well for Australia in the first five matches.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting is also on the comeback trail and is expected to bat within the next 24 hours for the first time since the Boxing Day Test.

Batsman Cameron White said it had been great to have Ponting around the dressing rooms as a source of advice and experience even though he has not been playing.

"It's great to have a person like Ricky around for anything," White said.

"He's obviously doing all he can to get his fitness right in time for the World Cup."

White said the final two matches of the series remained important stepping stones to the World Cup on the subcontinent even though the Australians have secured the series 4-1.

UK/SAF?

So I'm to assume it was AUS/PAK that lost the 5th test in Sydney by an innings and 83 runs?

So how is it that Shahzad isn't English? He's was born in Yorkshire FFS, no doubt you'll say Monty Panesar isn't English either.

As for the 4 current South African born players, they are of English blood, and migrated back to the motherland, they we're British citizens at birth, so I don't really see what the issue is.

I suppose Andrew Symonds shouldn't have played for Australia either then?

woah bro...

1/ Shahzad identifies himself as "Asian" as does his Cricinfo profile... He's proud of the fact.

2/ Never mentioned Monty...

3/ Never mentioned Usman...

4/ Never mentioned Roy...

Little bit of a touchy topic???

British born Asian, much the same as the other players you mentioned are South African born Britons.

Yep, I know you didn't mention the other guys, was simply making the point that England isn't the only cricket team in the world to have players born offshore playing for them.
Reason I mentioned Monty is that he is also of Asian (Indian) decent.

Not so much a touchy subject with myself personally, but some of the things I've heard at grounds this summer are an absolute disgrace, in particular those aimed at Ajmal & Monty.

I don't rate when players are abused because of their ethnicity: "Turban heads" "Kaffirs" etc...

Simply not acceptable on any levels.

Andrew Strauss, Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior, Ian Trott, Craig Kieswetter, Eoin Morgan, Michael Lumb, Ed Joyce.
All saffies or Irish and currently play for England.

I'd say the UK/SAF title is a fair call.

I'll let you two Mods fight that battle out... ;)

Going with Aus...

Ferg will play I hope, doesn't fail in ODI
Tait is likely to be fit... Two Sozzies in the side!

Clarke hopefully can back up, Haddin's die for a big one.

Watto will do it with bat and ball.

Lee is the comp leading wicket taker after copping abuse on safooty.net- will continue

The MALigned- Steve Smith, adored by westcoastpanther, is having the time of his life, and should go well again.

I cannot see Aussie losing.

Ireland's part of the UK now? Fair few people that will be unhappy to hear that.

Strauss, Pietersen, Prior, Trott (Jonathan, not Ian), Lumb, All Britons born in South Africa, they are English and have simply returned to their roots.

Kieswetter, once again British by birth, although born in South Africa, he is Scottish, but is therefore entitled to live/work in England, and played cricket in England long enough to qualify.

Joyce, plays for Ireland.

Morgan, Irish, although he has lived/played in England long enough to qualify, and has always wanted to represent England, remember that Ireland is not a full ICC member, so if you want to make a full time go of playing cricket, then you've got to look elsewhere.

Most post ever in a match thread the day before the match?

FWIW Australia should win this game, and probably the next one, as a group we're completley spent, its been a long tour, and that's showing with the number of players that have returned home early.
However its vital that we do show some fight, a win or 2 going into the world cup will do the confidence a world of good.

Its a shame the authorities in the grounds don't hold the same thoughts, far to busy policing the fun and making sure nobody even thinks about starting a Mexican wave.

Speaking of that, after the test in Sydney finished there was a large board in the pub that had written on it ''Tremlett downs Beer to win the Ashes'' ;) thought of that thread strangely enough

England have called up Liam Plunkett, the Durham pace bowler, into their injury-hit one-day squad, after Ajmal Shahzad was ruled out of the remainder of the series, although he will only arrive in Australia from the Lions tour of West Indies in time for the final match at Perth on Sunday.

Any issues with Plunkett and his heritage ;)

Made his test and ODI debut against Pakistan due to an injury to Simon Jones (born in Wales) ;)
