Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Established/elite SANFL players who moved to another club..

Postby GWW » Fri Feb 16, 2007 10:20 pm

I thought it might be an interesting exercise to list some players who moved clubs, not because they couldn't get a game at their orginal club, but for other reasons (to play finals, more money, argument with coach etc etc).

*Andrew Jarman, North Adelaide to Norwood.

*Neville Roberts, West Torrens to Norwood (via Richmond)

*Mark Williams, West Adelaide to Port Adelaide

*Peter Woite, Port Adelaide to Glenelg

*John Paynter, Glenelg to Sturt

*Gary Christie, South Adelaide to Glenelg

*Clayton Lamb, West Adelaide to Glenelg

*Neil Craig, Norwood to Sturt, to North Adelaide

*Eddie Fry, South Adelaide to Sturt

*Paul Weston, Glenelg to West Torrens (player/coach) to Norwood (via Essendon)

*Allan and Wayne Stringer, North Adelaide to Glenelg

*Craig Burton, West Adelaide to North Adelaide

*Brodie Atkinson, North Adelaide to Sturt

*Damian Squire, North Adelaide to Sturt

*Greg Whittlesea, Sturt to Glenelg (via Hawthorn)

*Ray Huppatz, Woodville to Port Adelaide (via Footscray and North Melbourne)

*Ken Eustice, West Adelaide to Centrals (player/coach), to Glenelg

Then theres the coaches who made a name for themself at a club, and subsequently went on to coach another club:

*John Halbert, Sturt player, coach of Glenelg

*Jack Oatey, Norwood player, coach of West Adelaide and Sturt

*Geoff Motley, Port Adelaide player, coach of North Adelaide

*Daryl Hicks, Sturt player, coach of Central District

*Neil Kerley, West Adelaide player, coach and/or player at South Adelaide, Glenelg, West Torrens and Central District

*Russell Ebert, Port Adelaide player, coach of Woodville

*Graham Cornes, Glenelg player, coach of South Adelaide

*Rick Davies, Sturt player, coach (and player) South Adelaide

*Michael Taylor, Norwood player, coach of West Adelaide

*Bob Hammond, North Adelaide player, coach of Norwood

*Greg Anderson, Port Adelaide player, coach of South Adelaide

I'm sure theres quite a few in both categories but they're the ones i could think of.

"Dinny" Reedman was probably the most famous, earliest and most influential.

You've also missed Darel Hart off your list, he was so establisehd at Central he had a promotional sew on badge whilst at Central which only had 2 players from each club.

Yeah i forgot about Schneebichler and Sewer. I didn't include Bubner because i think he was basically finished at Centrals when he went to Sturt. Also similarly Howard, who i think wasn't wanted at West anymore. Ditto Hargraves, Conway and Cooper (weren't wanted at original clubs), and i think Tylor left to go to Glenelg because of limited opportunies at Port.

I did think of Shearman as well, but wasn't sure exactly how established he was at Torrens.

Shearman had played 64 games for Essendon, including the 1957 GF, before coming to West Torrens where he captained the club, as well as South Australia.
