SANFL Stuffing up our league

Just a quickie here...
During Port Magpies dominant years I always thought as a supporter of lowly and poorly organised West Torrens that Ports stuffed up the competition because no one else could get a look in and it was bbbboringggg.
Then suddenly Central Districts came out of the woodwork and for the last 10 years we have been back to boring once again. I get free tickets to SANFL major round games (incl the GF) every year and I always give them away because what's the point?
And when I was a young bloke we used to call Richmond Oval Lou Ravesi Park - well before sponsorship was an event

obviously you don't have what We call passion. If that were the case, I and hundreds of fellow Central supporters wouldn't have gone to the footy for 36 years! OR South supporters! And they STILL go!

Dunno how you can say I lack passion. Low tolerance to boredom is more like it. I must say though in the old days you could get flogged by Port or Sturt one week and always look forward to the Central game because you knew the club song would ring out over beautiful Thebby Oval. And there's another reason why the SANFL needs a kick in the date - league footy should never have been taken away from Thebarton or Unley in the first place. Whicker's mob should fund the return of grass roots footy instead of swanning around on junkets, doing corporate lunches, renovating their palatial offices with swanky furniture and allowing themselves to be ****ed up the bum by the AFL at every turn.

I run a company that distributes nationally and internationally, so I UNDERSTAND revenue Vs Profit. Therefore when I say Port Adelaide generates $11-12 M in revenue per year for the SANFL, a substantial portion of that must create profit, otherwise the SANFL need to be put squarely under the blowtorch.

Port Adelaide and its supporters have been generating money for the SANFL for 140 years. Your mob of Jonny come latelys with the Decade of dominance doesn't change that.

Like many on here, I also UNDERSTAND the reasons why many companies sponsor SANFL clubs. Most of us don't have a major car manufacturer on our back doorstep.

And finally, I UNDERSTAND that I should never argue with fools. Because they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. UNDERSTAND that RC?

Must be difficult for you now that others agree and the figures dont lie. As I have been saying for years, the SANFL could easily survive without PAFC's essential to everything revenue if we needed to. Firming up the crows monolopy on the SA-AFL market thus firming up a very profitable revenue stream for the SANFL/SANFL clubs. Without us having to suffer anymore hidden surprises by the SANFL commission/PAFC.

RC, we need 2 AFL teams in Adelaide. Even if it wasn't Port Adelaide. You take away 11 AFL games from AAMI Stadium each season and you've got a very different financial scenario (worse) than you think we have now.

Apart from the 22 AFL games, each market like Adelaide needs the rivalry of two teams. Take that away and us Crows supporters will become even more apathetic to going to games than some of us are already. The Showdowns are two of the biggest AAMI Stadium crowds of the season. Despite the grants to the PAFC, the SANFL clubs have not seen any hit to their annual distribution. What does that tell you?

While an SANFL compeition could survive possibly hoping that the Crows prop it up on it's own I think you'd see a cut in the SANFL distribution and our SANFL clubs would be even more reliant on their non-football related businesses.

2 AFL teams gives you the buffer if one has a bad season and the other does well so the crowds even out. If we only had the Crows and no rival if they had a bad year the finaces could start to look diabolical.

It was very different back then. The first AFL team in Adelaide. Lots of neutrals and bandwagonners. People would stand on their seats when watching (well, I did). It was sensational in those early days. Tickets would sell out two weeks in advance. Now 75% of the crowd have sat in their same seats for 20 years and sometimes you can hear a pin drop and 10,000 people with tickets don't even turn up! Dropping PAFC wouldn't automatically return us to those early days.

That's not the issue here though. It's how much better has the SANFL gone since it had 22 AFL home games instead of 11? This is despite the money they've had to kick back into the PAFC. Catering revenue even from a 20,000 crowd would be huge.

What a great defeatist attitude. I reckon the Eagles went into 2000 as favourites. So you gave away your 2006 major round tickets and missed watching your team win a GF, perhaps that's the point. Hopefully, you're not a "typical" Eagles "supporter". Also, as a nuetral observer I didn't find the Eagles comeback against Glenelg, boring last year.

I think people forget the 95 and 96 GFs when they talk about Centrals' rise to dominance. It's a good point you make. 13 of 16 GFs and won 9 of the 13.

gotta say, I ALWAYS was & still am of the opinion that Adelaide isn't big enough to support more than 1 AFL side. Especially in tougher times like we are experiencing nowadays.
