Mashrafe Mortaza, the Bangladesh allrounder, has not been included in the 15-man squad for the World Cup. Mortaza had injured his right knee while playing club cricket in Dhaka in December and was striving to recover in time for the tournament. He had begun bowling off a short run-up during net sessions in the last few days but the selectors decided against including him in the campaign. Shakib Al Hasan was named captain of the squad and Tamim Iqbal will be his deputy.

Squad: Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique, Shahriar Nafees, Raqibul Hasan, Mohammad Ashraful, Mushfiqur Rahim, Naeem Islam, Mahmudullah, Abdur Razzak, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Nazmul Hossain, Suhrawadi Shuvo.

Kenya have announced their 15-man squad for next month's World Cup and it is a combination of youth and experience under newly-appointed captain Jimmy Kamande. The announcement was more of a rubber-stamping exercise than a surprise, given it is the same group who are currently preparing for the tournament with matches in India.

Steve Tikolo, the 41-year-old allrounder who led his country to the semi-finals in 2003, will be taking part in his fifth World Cup as will 32-year-old Thomas Odoyo. At the other end of the spectrum, nine of the squad will be making their World Cup debuts.

Kenya squad Jimmy Kamande (capt), Seren Waters, Alex Obanda, David Obuya, Collins Obuya, Steve Tikolo, Tamnay Mishra, Rakep Patel, Maurice Ouma, Thomas Odoyo, Nehemiah Odhiambo, Elijah Otieno, Peter Ongondo, Shem Ngoche, James Ngoche

West Indies have recalled batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan for the 2011 World Cup, after he had been left out of the national team's rain-marred tour of Sri Lanka last year. Sarwan last represented West Indies in the ODI series at home against South Africa in May and June last year and was subsequently dropped due to fitness issues and indifferent form on the domestic circuit. The World Cup team will be led by Darren Sammy and also includes fast-bowling allrounder Andre Russell, who is yet to make his ODI debut.

West Indies squad: Darren Sammy (capt), Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Darren Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Devon Smith, Sulieman Benn, Nikita Miller, Carlton Baugh (wk), Andre Rusell, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Adrian Barath

Ashish Bagai will lead a young Canadian squad to the 2011 World Cup, and Rizwan Cheema will be his deputy. Apart from Bagai, seamer Henry Osinde and allrounder John Davison are the two other players in the side with prior World Cup experience.

Canada have four Pakistan-born players in their squad who are still waiting to receive visas to enter India, where Canada play four of their six group games. Batsman Rizwan Cheema, allrounder Umar Bhatti, paceman Khurram Chohan and back-up keeper Hamza Tariq were all ruled out of Canada's recent pre-tournament warm-up in India because they couldn't enter the country, but have been named in the World Cup squad.

Squad: Ashish Bagai (capt & wk), Rizwan Cheema (vice-capt), Harvir Baidwan, Nitish Kumar, Hiral Patel, Tyson Gordon, Henry Osinde, John Davison, Ruvindu Gunasekera, Parth Desai, Karl Whatham, Khurram Chohan, Jimmy Hansra, Zubin Surkari, Balaji Rao.

Standby: Hamza Tariq (for Tyson Gordon)

Makes sense replace a middle order batsman with an opening batsman .....

Didn't do too bad in the middle order today.

I think the middle order is where he is best suited.

Netherlands guns Ryan Ten Doeschate and Tom Coopoer make for interesting reading statistically.

Overall stats

Ten Doeschate, 26 innings, 1234 runs at 68.55 (3 centuries)
Cooper, 10 innings, 589 runs at 65.44 (1 century)

They both have impressive beginnings, but Ten Doeschate has only played three innings against Test nations, and Cooper is yet to do so.

It will be near on impossible for teams to improve without facing quality opponents.

Didn't he play for Australia a year or two back? That would exclude him from Netherlands selection wouldn't it?

On the flip side, I reckon he played for Netherlands first so I was surprised he was eligible to play for Australia.

Eoin Morgan played at the last world cup for Ireland and will play in this one for England so not sure what the ruling is.

According to wikapedia he also took 17 for 137 (8 for 61 and 9 for 76) in a match (albeit against the USA) which was the best first class figures since Jim Laker's 19 for 90 during the 1956 Ashes. Dunno how true this is but it is funny anyway.

I doubt Canada vs USA would have 1st class status.
If it does then it needs changing cause we don't want hacks like him re-writing record books.

Here's the playing strips the teams will wear - looks like they're going back to the uniform designs of the 1990's.

Sean Ervine has pulled out of Zimbabwe's squad for the World Cup, and will remain at Hampshire in 2011. Ervine, who had been named in both the preliminary and finalised squads for the tournament, had a change of heart shortly before the national team were due to depart for a training camp in Dubai.

"After having had time to reflect on all of the circumstances, I have realised that this is not the right time to leave Hampshire," said Ervine. "I have a great relationship with this club and its supporters and I feel like part of a family. I feel Hampshire is my home; so much so that I am planning to get married there next year. I do not, therefore, want to be away for long periods of time."

It had appeared certain that Ervine would part ways with Hampshire to reignite his international career, which he described as his "ultimate goal"

Alistair Campbell, the head of Zimbabwe's selection panel and former national captain, expressed his disappointment at Ervine's withdrawal. "Zimbabwe Cricket was very excited about Sean coming back into the setup. However, he may not have realised that international cricket is a lot harder than he remembers," Campbell said in a ZC statement.

"He has lived a very comfortable life in county cricket for the last six years and obviously decided at the last minute he might not be up to the challenges of international cricket after all
. A lot of people have gone to a lot of effort to make it happen for Sean. Although is very late in the day to change his mind, it is better than realising his mistake during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011."

CRICKET

The Bangladesh government will attempt to clean up the country leading into this month's Cricket World Cup, by removing around 300 disabled beggars from the streets of Chittagong.

Chittagong, Bangladesh's second largest city, is the venue for two Group B matches on March 11 and March 14 when hosts Bangladesh play England and the Netherlands.

"There is no need to beg and vex people when the city authority has pledged to pay us daily sustenance," said beggar Nur Mohammad.

"We beg because physical disabilities keep us away from doing labour for earning."

The beggars gathered at the office of the city Corporation as requested by the mayor, who asked them to accept a daily allowance of 150 taka ($2) each for the next three months in exchange for stopping begging on the streets.

Some 40 percent of Bangladesh's 150 million people live below the poverty line, earning little more than a dollar per day.

The Feb. 19-April 2 World Cup is being co-hosted by Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh are in Group B along with England, India, Ireland, the Netherlands, South Africa and West Indies. They begin their campaign against India in the tournament opener in Dhaka on Feb. 19.
