AU V EG ODI game 3

Postby mal » Sun Jan 23, 2011 12:07 am

Australia Lead 2-0
5 games to go, need 2 more to win this series
7 ODIS in total, far too many

Been a good effort by the lads to get this 2 game lead
The selectors much MALigned this season, have pulled off some good inclusions this series
DOUGGGGIE, whom I feel is a Test player, not a ODI player, was a superb selection
MARSH to bat middle order was a brilliant decision by someone
LEE one of the all time great AU ODI bowlers , considered by some to be past it, has surprised a few of us with his bowling so far
Also SMITH is a revelation with the ball this series
CLARKES useage of SMITH as a bowler this series is bordering masterstroking

Most pleasing aspect is the fightbacks by the lads
Chased down almost 300 [and a record chase I believe] to win game 1 was sensational
To be 4/33 and 8 for SFA and win game 2 was a character building win

2 ODI wins dont compensate for a dissappointing summer v EG
But its important to win these games, its got a lot to do with pride

Lets hope we make it 3 in a row

I think we've all had the revelation that he simply can't bowl. And for the most part, Clarke's usage of him has been awesome. Only time he's really got the timing wrong is when he's decided to bowl him. Apart from that, though, couldn't be better.

DOUGGGGIE, whom I feel is a Test player, not a ODI player, was a superb selection only cause there was no-one else, hopefully CA didn't interrupt his tv commitments portraying an idiot
MARSH to bat middle order was a brilliant decision by someone he came in because hussey was injured and missed out on the WC squad. why not in from the start?????..nothing brilliant about that other than his innings..another Hilditch error
LEE one of the all time great AU ODI bowlers , considered by some to be past it, has surprised a few of us with his bowling so far
Also SMITH is a revelation with the ball this series
CLARKES useage of SMITH as a bowler this series is bordering masterstroking garbage.......your love affair with Clarke's captaincy is admiral MAL but it ain't no masterstroke throwing Smith the ball. I hope the kid does well but his bowling is below par at the moment and to say it's Clarke's captaincy is CRAP!

Most pleasing aspect is the fightbacks by the lads
Chased down almost 300 [and a record chase I believe] to win game 1 was sensational agreed
To be 4/33 and 8 for SFA and win game 2 was a character building win when is the captain going to stand up????? or is he a mike brearley with endorsements?

2 ODI wins dont compensate for a dissappointing summer v EG
But its important to win these games, its got a lot to do with pride

Some of you guys are very unforgiving
You get a set against a player and continue on and on

SMITH
I will discuss Steve Smith
He is copping as much crapp as Shane Watson did a few years ago
I had always thought Wattos batting was good enough for him to become a good player[but never his bowling]
With Smith I have no confidence whether his batting or bowling will make or break him
Im fence sitting with Smiths Career
Smith is a good package if he continues to improve, a spinning allrounder is a rarity
I say you have to perservere with him a while longer

There are 2 things some of youse have gotta perhaps start doing
If we bag a player like Smith, we must also :
A : If we think he aint up to it, then offer alternatives [replacement players, change in batting order etc etc]
B : When a player does perform , praise the bloke, already on this thread we have bagged Douggie/Smith after they have performed well with the ball in this ODI series

SMITH bowling this ODI series
2/12[3] wickets of BELL/MORGAN
1/5[2] wicket of TROTT

3/17 off 5 overs , and 3 very good batsman he has dismissed
Dont we think he deserves some recognition for his bowling so far ?

PS
I dont wanna get bagged if Smith takes 0/100 for the rest of the series !

I am actually a bit pissed that smith doesnt bowl more. Ive thought he has bowled well but needs more than 2 or 3 overs/game.
The guy has talent and like to see us stick with him for a while, i reckon he will turn out ok

I think mal's pretty right with this.

My opinion:

Is Smith in the best 8 bowlers in Australia - No.

Is Smith in the best 8 batsmen in Australia - No.

Do Australia have many more promising young players than Smith - No.

Might he become a good allrounder with more experience at international level - Perhaps.

Worth waiting to see.

Christian & O'Keefe as allrounders, definitely. O'Keefe proved his ability last night for NSW with the bat.

Ferg as a batsmen, he has already proved himself at the level but that counts for nothing it seems. Selectors would rather see their golden boy come good than send him back to NSW to see if he can make some runs.

I agree about Christian. His non-selection at ODI level sends a message that performances are less important than a bowler's height (Hastings selection).

I think O'Keeffe is an OK cricketer, not up to international standard yet.

I suppose I'm just giving a rationale for the selectors sticking with Smith, rightly or wrongly.

O'Keefe is superior to Smith.

The selectors don't want to admit another stuff up though.

Bit of background on Luke Wright.

40 matches (ODI) with only 2 fifties, average 22, and 15 wickets at 51 (never taken more than 2 wickets in an innings).

Somewhat irrelevant like Hastings... ;)

I think Smith is a good cricketer, not yet quite up to international standard.

I think O'Keeffe is an OK cricketer.

There are a lot of O'Keefe types, not many Smith types.

That doesn't mean Smith will make it, but given the state of Australian cricket, they obviously think he's worth a try.
