I know that there are many pressing issues that give most of us the gripes - telemarketers, petrol price hikes on long weekends, pinheads running Canberra, speed cameras in locations where the last known accident was when a horse and cart tangled with a bloke riding a penny farthing bike on the wrong side of the road and people smugglers. But my favourite is sports casters who continue to refer to soccer as football. It might be in Europe, UK and other places but here in Australia football is football. Its played with a Sherrin or a Burley not a netball.

When introduced to people (when I lived in Canberra), they'd ask if I played AFL. I'd say "no, I play for Tuggeranong in the ACTAFL" (thinking they must've thought I played for the Swans or something. "Playing what?" they'd asked. I said "football". "AFL?" they'd ask. "No, Aussie Rules". "Oh, AFL" they'd respond nodding appreciatingly. I'd walk away thinking they were looney!

And so the conversations went around and around. No wonder I did no good picking chicks up in pubs when all I did was confuse the bejeezus out of them.

Only months later I realised they were speaking about Aussie Rules, not "THE" AFL.

The task to educate the ignorant isn't helped by numerous commentators (even guys like David Parkin) who basically refer to sport as "AFL". Seems to be a lost cause already.
