I am considering buying a jukebox
Either a vynil or compact disc jukebox

QUESTIONS
Where kanhai find them ?
How much will I need to spend ?
Are they a good investment ?
Are parts easily attainable ?
Are repairs expensive ?
Who has one ?

Thanks Psyber.... I've got one (a jukebox that is) but I'm certainly not that way inclined. Or weren't last I checked.

Anyway.....I bought a vinyl jukebox off of ebay about 7 years ago. There are some out there, not all good. You could possibly source one through bumper.com.au (Melbourne), amusementworx.com.au (Kilkenny) or dickesons.com.au (Edwardstown)

Things to consider:

obtaining 45's - which is getting more and more difficult. Ones of any quality can be upward of 5 bucks a pop.
repairs - there really is only one or two places that fix them. And one of them I used is not reliable by any means.
Investment - Wurlitzers are expensive, but will only increase in value. I've got a RoweAmi which will hover around the cost price as long as it's working I'd say.

My jukebox is in very ordinary condition visually as it used to be in a pub in the 70's and 80's (in Geelong). But it works, and sounds great at parties. I've got 1400 45's collected over the years and some duplicates which I'd gladly part with. Some of those duplicates you wouldn't want.

If I had my time again, I'd invest in one of the hard drive versions - and I'm still contemplating making one. The CD ones are old hat.

Been advised if buying privately to beware as a lot of people are selling when a certain drive part is rooted, this part costs about $2.5k + to replace, and comes from Germany ???
I wuz also advised not to buy a JB from auctions or ebay
Retail price for a decent Wurlitzer is about $8k

Dont wanna spend $8k

Saw a few 2nd hand ones around the traps for about $3k

Why are these JBs about 5 grand cheaper than a Wurlitzer ?
Im prepared to spend about the $3k mark, but dont wanna end up with a lemon

That probably explained why I've kept mine hidden in a storage shed for so long.
All that time I was blaming my wife wrongly for her grand piano dominating the space in the house.
Perhaps I should admit to owning two violins, and a recorder, too.

Mal, Wurlitzers are like the Rolls Royce of Jukeboxes. Every other make is a mere Barina. However, if you don't mind having a Barina in your lounge room (hmm, this takes me back to Psybers' gay remark now), then you will be fine.

Remember that RoweAMI, Seeburg, Rock-OLA and some of the other old companies aren't manufacturing parts any more, hence they're cheaper to buy. The mechanism inside might look cumbersome but it's pretty simple. It's all belt driven. So parts can be obtained from anywhere.

Wurlitzer parts can still be obtained (from Germany). Also, the expensive Wurlitzers will increase in value as I mentioned before. Mine wont.

The classic Wurlizters with the neon lights are worth a mint now.

Personally I'd ring Amusement Worx or Dickesons and ask for a 'reputable' brand of JB. Then you've got two choices, see if they have one that you can buy from them or buy one off of Ebay. Either way, Amusement Worx will be able to fix it up for you. You should be able to get away with one that works for under a grand. My mate bought a Wurlitzer for $1100, I bought mine around the same time for $330.

Oh, the other thing if you are going to buy a vinyl JB - go for a JB that holds 100 records.

I just brought a NSM Jukebox off EB and paid $175. I had the place where I brought it look at it and found out it needs some work. I am waiting on the manual so I can find out how to fix it. I need 2 new stylus I have a price for them. It will not stop and pick up records and the arm is broken. Motor and everything else works fine.

But not given up on a Jukebox as yet
