Reakon his monologue is actually pretty limp.

But the overreaction has been hilarious.

I love his stand-up. It's brilliant.
He's not afraid to say what others won't and in this PC world that's not looked upon favourably.
But shite it's funny!

When will the Yanks learn to take the piss out of themselves???

Most of the material is pretty funny and he delivers it well, not sure why anyone would be up in arms over it.

I hear you CP. They take themselves so very seriously it's almost sickening sometimes.

I am a huge Gervais fan but I haven't seen much of what he did at the Golden Globes yet.

I'm amazed anyone would think that wasn't all planned, scripted and rehearsed to within an inch of it's life...including the reactions of people like JD. Gervais wouldn't ad lib all that...he may sail close to the edge but he's a professional and does it with a script even when it's his stand-up shows. The only thing these shows can't control is the occasional human rights lecture acceptance speech from the likes of Sarandon, Robins et al.

What better way to increase publicity...albeit after the event...for an award ceremony that is always in the shadow of the Oscars. What's the betting that the viewing figures went through the roof as word spread.

He even said on Ellen a few days earlier he was going to do it. Told her he would be lining up Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen and Betty White because he only has a go at the weak and feeble.

He said he wouldn't have a go at Russell Crowe or Mickey Rourke.

It's a good point JAS. I hadn't thought of that.

It reminds me of that Kanye West stunt at the American Video Music Awards - what I thought was a very poorly acted attempt to pretend there was a controversy with that female singer.

...and the stunt with Sacha Baron Cohen and Eminem at some music awards involving the wire harnesss thing. IIRC at the time the medja were all 'omg how could that Brit comedian do that to Eminem' and then they admit the whole thing was planned.

Thinking about it a bit more it's a win win for everyone...the Globes people get heaps of extra publicity, Gervaise's fans love it so great for him and those he picked on get defended by fans and medja so good for them too.
