That's the key, injuries to key players particularly with the young inexperienced South list. Having said that our list is much stronger than the last 2 years and from my understanding the players are substantially stronger and fitter. Back to topic, Crabb, Cockshell, Thewlis and Liddle all with leadership qualities.

Agree to an extent ccl, but if that was the case, Ian Callinan would be captain at Central, Jeremy Clayton at Port (in recent seasons), Jimmy Allan at North etc etc...

I think it is an individual club thing but so much more has to be looked at. Things like loyalty, longevity of service, leadership qualities, ability to lead by example etc etc.

That's why I think Paul Thomas is captain of Central, Jeremy Clayton hasn't led the Magpies and Clint Alleway was the newly appointed skipper of North.

South will make the right choice and for mine, I think it will be one of the local lads. If Nick Liddle had perhaps been in SA for another year or two, then perhaps yes then.

All just IMHO mate...

Murphy for my liking is to quiet on the field, i watched several games and he did not stand out at all.. his ability to find the ball was much better last year but not his leadership. maybe Thewlis of Crabb

A team's best / most talented player isn't always necessarily the one with the best leadership skills, JMHO.

There's no legitimate candidate whatsoever... I think a senior player such as Thewlis with a younger player to be his co captain may be the way to go. Crabb would struggle to play league footy at 8 other clubs in IMHO.

So, like I stated before, why bother with a captain if no-ones good enough? If you appoint one just for the sake of it, the players won't respect that appointment anyway! Why not just take direction from the coach via the runners? At least until someone shines enough to become a true candidate!

Take direction from the coach via the runners. I reckon that might happen already but you never know. Is this only done if there is no captain?
