Peter Markers moustache is better than Kane Cornes.

Could've tried for a better comparison MAL.

Maybe was he better than roger Woodcock ?

This is interesting about Peter Marker in Magarey Medals
In the 1971 medal he was 1 vote behind Russell Ebert
In the 1975 medal he was 1 vote behind Peter Woite [COP that !]

MARKER
Gutsy and talented midfielder for the bays,
Is a member of the 200 game club

QUESTION
Is he better than Kane Cornes ?
Would Marker have been a gun in the VFL if he played there ?

Peter Marker was a sensational footballer who never gets the recognition a number of his counterparts do. As said before, lost two medals by 1 vote, and had he won them, history would be regarding him as one of the greats. Funny how 2 umpiring votes can determine history, and a reason why we should never use Magarey Medals as a guide to a player's greatness.

Marker was tough as an old boot, and cunning as a fox, but had the brilliant skills to match, and I always said if I could have one player from Glenelg over the past 40 years to play at Norwood, it would be Marker. He suffered serious injury way too early in his career which robbed him of at least another 5 years at his peak. I remember them saying when he was state captain, and only about 21-22 years of age, that he had calcified ankles that would threaten his career.

Better than Kane Cornes? In every way possible, although it must be said Marker was possibly more suited to his era, just as Cornes is in his. I think it was Footscray who chased Marker for many years, and had he gone over there at an early age, would have been one of the great VFL players in that time.

I rate Marker as equal to any player I've seen in SANFL. The only two I couldn't rate him with are Barrie Robran, and Phil Carman (when playing at his best). I recall Marker starting at CHF and taking some hangers there before settling into the pivot. One piece of footage I loved watching was a Glenelg ruckman getting the hit out, Marker sharking the ball, evading two tackles, taking two bounces and then hitting Fred Phillis on the chest with a lace out 40 metre stab pass that never went more than throat high. Great to watch.

Pretty reasonable commentator too. One that is well worth aspiring to. Calm, accurate, not overblown with hyperbole, called it as he saw it, not what he hoped/wanted to happen. One that I really enjoyed listening to, and have studied over the years.

Yes, Marker and Day made quite a team didn't they? Bruce McAvaney used to be like Marker until the *AFL got to him.

*AFL: a contraption invented in 1990 with the sole purpose of turning good things into crap. When marketed cleverly and unleashed upon an unsuspecting public, has the potential to make squillions of dollars ... and nobody can work out why.

Never been fond of Glenelg players as a rule, but I'd make an exception here. Marker was a great player and a great person too. Intelligence shone through in his play and his commentating. Part of his 'gift of the gab' as a commentator was knowing when nothing needed to be said - a very rare quality in that field.

Couldn't agree more with AH's comments that Marker would've played more than 200 games with Footscray if he'd wished, that he was deserving of a MM, and the difference that one or two votes can make. Peter Woite was a fine player, but nowhere near the level of Marker.

Loved the (true) story that as a youngster at Glenelg playing in the Seconds, Marker would leave straight after the game so that he could watch his beloved Roosters play.

Yeah, I loved channel 7's coverage in the early 80's. Marker is an interesting personality for me because his career finished just as I started following the SANFL as a kid so I dont remember watching him play, yet he has been a prominent media identity since although not in the last 10 or so years. Interestingly I hear he watches barely any SANFL footy at all these days. For those who saw him play, I'd be interested in your view as to what type of player he was and whether he compared in style to any recent (within last 20 or so years) SANFL or AFL player..

I'm not certain, but I think he did read the Sport on Channel 7, perhaps from mid 80's or so, and then he was part of the Call sign changeover with ADS (and SAS) and he then went on to read Sports news on ch10. Although just thinking about it, I think Bruce McAvaney may have read Sports news for local ch 7 in mid 80's, so it may have all depended on what year Bruce went to Melbourne to work.

If it helps, Bruce's last SANFL Grand Final call was 1983 (West v Sturt).

Yeah defintely North. He spoke at a lunch I went to once where he told of playing reserves for the Bays in Round 1 1967, and then going to Unley to watch North, and thus Barrie Robran's first game.

Top shelf footballer. Top shelf commentator.

Totally agree .. As a laugh I grew up as a kid calling them Uncle Pete (Marker), Uncle Daysie and Uncle Rob (Kelvin) such was the regularity with which they featured among the TV and videos I watched.

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.
